Botswana - Convert Foreign Commercial Pilot License

Apply In Person

  1. The application to Convert ForeignCommercial Pilot License shall be made to the Civil Aviation Authority of Botswana (CAAB) office. CAAB Contact Details
  2. Applicants will be required to collect and complete the following forms, Convert Foreign Commercial Pilot License Form, Application for an Aviation Medical Assessment form; also the applicant will be required to book an appointment for Botswana Air law Examinations (theory and flight test)by completing the Entry for Commercial Pilot Licence Knowledge Examinations. Forms are obtainable at the CAAB office, Personnel Licensing (PEL) unit or download it via the CAAB website CAAB Application Form or directly download it using this link, Application for Conversion of a Foreign Licence, Entry for Commercial Pilot Licence Knowledge Examinations, Application for an Aviation Medical Assessment
  3. The duly completed Application forms, attached to the supporting documents as mentioned under the “Required Documents” section of this page is to be submitted to the CAAB head officePersonnel Licensing (PEL) unit, for consideration, only if the applicant is a holder of a valid medical certificate or after ascertaining that your medical assessment has been assessed as “fit” by the Civil Aviation Medical Board (CAMB). This will be certified in the Aviation Medical Assessment application form. Any omission of the required information or documents will render the application process incomplete.
  4. Upon receipt of the application, the Personnel Licensing (PEL) officers will check for discrepancies or ineligibility in the application documents. If a discrepancy that cannot be immediately corrected exists in any of the documents, the application and all the submitted documents will be returned to the applicant and should not be re-submitted until the discrepancy has been corrected.
  5. If the PEL officer is satisfied that all the requirements have been met for the application for the license, the application is registered for processing and consideration.
  6. Applicants will be required to pay prescribed fees as mentioned on the CAAB fee schedule, (Refer to the “Fees” section of this page),which is payableeither in cash at the CAAB cashier counter/accounts office or by Direct deposit / Electronic Funds Transfer or by cheque in favour of the CAAB.
  7. The applicant is issued with a payment slip and an acknowledgment slip as proof of submission of the application and for inquiry referencing if the need arises.
  8. Applicants will then be required to take Botswana Air law Examinations (theory and flight test) with an appropriately approved Botswana Delegated Pilot Examiner (DPE).
    Please note, that it is compulsory to be in possession of a valid identity document or passport to enter and attempt these examinations.
  9. An applicant who fails a knowledge test shall be disqualified for further testing until the applicant proves that he or she has gained a practical experience of one month.
  10. Having successfully passed the Botswana Air law Examinations, theBotswana Delegated Pilot Examiner will issue the applicant a completed and certified; Initial Skills Test or Competency Check Report for Commercial Pilot License (Aeroplane or Helicopter). Copies of these forms are obtainable at the CAAB office or download via the CAAB website or directly download using this link;Initial Skills Test or Competency Check Report for Commercial Pilot License (Aeroplane),Initial Skills Test or Competency Check Report for Commercial Pilot License (Helicopter)
    NOTE: This form is to be completed in full and must be initiated by BOTH the DPE and the candidate with the exception of the signature page.
  11. TheInitial Skills Test or Competency Check Report for Commercial Pilot is to be submitted within 14 days of the completion of the skills test to the CAAB Personnel Licensing (PEL) office for processing.
  12. The PEL office will then establish the authenticity and validity of the foreign Aircraft Transport Pilot license, by contacting the authority that issued the license.
  13. If satisfied with the outcome, the application is approved and the applicant will be notified when the license is ready for collection by phone or mail.
  14. Proceed to the CAAB Personal license office and present the acknowledgment letter and identity document and proof of payment of the applicable license fee to be validated by the licensing office.
  15. The applicant will be made to, sign on the signature pad/book and will be issued with the printed converted license at the CAAB Personnel Licensing (PEL) Office.

  • A knowledge test report and/or skill test report conducted by a CAAB Designated Pilot Examiner
  • Personal logbooks or other records substantiating the flight experience shown on the Application form
  • A photocopy of the applicant’s logbook
  • Two (2) color passport size recent photographs (full face)
  • Valid identity document (passport for foreigners /identity card (Omang) for citizens)
  • Payment receipt of the prescribed fees
  • Attach a confirmation letter of employment

Eligibility

  • Where the applicant holds a Commerial Pilot license the following shall apply:
    • The foreign license must be of validity of up to six months.
    • Any limitation on the foreign license will apply as appropriate.
    • The license will authorize the applicant to fly only the aircraft types physically endorsed on the foreign license/logbook and which on the Botswana Aircraft Register.
    • The applicant shall undergo a skill test conducted by a CAAB Designated Pilot Examiner.
    • The applicant shall include evidence of language proficiency in the English Language with the language proficiency of at least level 4.
    • The applicant shall provide evidence of appropriate flight hours.
    • The applicant must hold a valid medical certificate issued by a CAAB Designated Medical Examiner.
  • Where the applicant holds a commercial pilot license and airline transport pilot license the following shall apply:
    • The applicant must hold a current validation certificate.
    • The applicant must have completed 500 flight hours in Botswana registered aircraft which are operated by an operator established in Botswana exercising privileges granted by the validation certificate.
    • Must present to the Authority the foreign license and evidence of the 500 flight hours by presenting records such as the logbook
    • The applicant must hold a valid medical certificate issued by a CAAB Designated Medical Examiner.
    • Proof of English language proficiency.

Validity

  • The validity of the converted Foreign Commercial Pilot license is 5 years from the date of issue, the license shall remain valid for that period unless suspended, revoked, or cancelled by the authority.
  • Applicants need to apply for license renewal to CAAB at least Sixty (60) days before expiry.

Important Notes:

  • Any pilot who wishes to fly on an aircraft registered in Botswana using their foreign license, needs to obtain an authorization from CAAB.
  • This authorization is generally given by the CAAB’s PEL Office through a validation or a conversion of the foreign license.
  • In general, the validation process is used for short-term authorization while the conversion process is used for longer-term authorization.

  • Conversion of a pilot’s foreign Commercial Pilots License (CPL) allows a pilot who has a foreign pilots’ license to be able to fly in Botswana on a long term basis.
  • Commercial pilots train as private pilots, which allows them to learn the basics of flying before progressing into more complicated planes and situations.
  • Having a Commercial Pilot License (CPL) allows flying for a compensation or a hire, so it is the choice, if you wish to pursue flying as a career.
