The cancellation of a vehicle registration can only occur in the following two scenarios as listed below and it can only be effective by the Department of Road Transport and Safety Offices. Department of Road Transport and Safety Offices Location & Contact Details

• On application by the owner of the vehicle, upon exchange/transfer of ownership or where the vehicle has been destroyed, broken up, or has left Botswana permanently.
• Where the Department of Road Transport and Safety Director has reason to believe that a vehicle registered has been destroyed, broken up, or has left Botswana permanently.
  

Cancellation by the Director of Department of Road Transport and Safety:

1. The Director may, by notice etheir in writing or personal, express his intent to cancel the registration of a vehicle if, at any time, it is proved to his satisfaction that a vehicle registered has been destroyed, broken up, or has left Botswana permanently.
2. If before the elapse of one month from the date of service of such notice the registered owner fails to satisfy the Director that such vehicle has not been destroyed, broken up, or has not left Botswana permanently, the Director shall cancel the registration thereof forthwith.
3. Where the Director cancels the registration of a vehicle, the registered owner of the vehicle shall within 10 days thereafter hand or send the registration book in respect there of to the Director for cancellation.
   

Cancellation by the owner of the vehicle:

1. The owner of a registered vehicle shall file the application to cancel a vehicle registration, in such a manner as prescribed by the Department of Road Transport and Safety.
2. Applicants will be required to submit all relevant certified supporting documentation as may be requested by the Authority; in addition to the original vehicle registration booklet and identification document.
3. Upon receipt of the application, the Department of Road Transport and Safety registration & licensing office will check for discrepancies or ineligibility in the application documents. If a discrepancy that cannot be immediately corrected exists in any of the documents, the application and all the submitted documents will be returned to the applicant and should not be re-submitted until the discrepancy has been rectified.
4. Applicants are issued with an acknowledgment letter/ receipt as a proof of submission of the application file and for inquiry referencing if the need arises.
5. After successful document evatulation phase the vehicle registration will be cancelled and the owner of the vehicle will be notified by the department licensing and registration office and required he (owner) will be required surrender the original vehicle registration booklet and remove the vehicle’s Botswana licence plate and have it destroyed.
   

• Original vehicle registration booklet.
• Certified copies of valid identities.
• Any other additional document requested by the Authority.
