Apply In-Person

1. You should contact the Department of Occupational Health and Safety Ministry of Labour near you for more information on how to file the application with the department.
2. Accurately fill in the application form (Occupational Health and Safety (OSH) Form 1) which can be obtained from the above office
3. Once the application form is received by the department, it will be verified and processed
4. Within 2 days an inspection will be carried on the premises to check its suitability, for the nature stated in the application.
5. If the factory (premise) passes the inspection, the Director of Occupational Health and Safety shall issue the applicant a registration certificate.

• Any other document that may be specified by the authorized officer

Businesses who have factories in Botswana which meet the following criteria qualify for this service. • Premises must be suitably designed for the intended purpose, in relation to drainage of floors, ventilation, lighting, thermal stress, and overcrowding • There must be adequate provision of suitable facilities (e.g. drinking water, sanitary conveniences, accommodation for clothing not worn during working hours and washing facilities).

Factory (premises) registration is proof that the occupier has permission to conduct the operation(s) at the location specified on the certificate. Registration is required for premises where persons are regularly employed in any of the following activities, or similar activities for purposes of trade or gain:

• Manufacturing, altering, repairing, ornamenting, finishing, cleaning, washing, breaking up, demolition or adapting of any article for sale
• Printing by letterpress or bookbinding
• Generation of electricity
• Supply of water using mechanical power
• Sewage works using mechanical power

Premises where activities similar to the above are undertaken by the local or central Government also require registration.

According to the Factory Act of Botswana, it is an offence for anyone to operate a factory before obtaining a certificate of registration of the premises with the ministry of labour and home affairs. An offender is liable to fines, imprisonment or both.
