Botswana - Apply for Roadworthiness Certificate

Apply In-Person

  1. The application for a Roadworthiness Certificate shall be made to the Department of Road Transport and Safety (DRTS) office, which is under the Ministry of Transport and Communications. DRTS Contact Details.
  2. Collect and complete the Vehicle Roadworthiness Examination Form, copies of these forms are available at the inquiries desk at DRTS offices across the country, or directly download it using this link:Vehicle Roadworthiness Examination Form.
  3. The applicant will be required to submit the following certified supporting documentation; in addition to the duly completed application form in all respect to the nearest DRTS office, permit-issuing unit. Any omission of these documents will render the registration process incomplete.
    • Customs clearance and Police clearance certificates (for vehicles that exceed 3 years of age and are yet to be registered in Botswana)
    • Original vehicle registration document / blue book (for vehicles already registered in Botswana)
    • Certified copy of applicant’s national identification card (for vehicles that exceed three (3) years of age and are yet to be registered in Botswana)
  4. Upon receipt of the application file, the license issuing officer will verify if all the necessary information and documentation has been provided and that the applications comply with the selection criteria before advising the client to pay the application fee as mentioned under the ‘Fees’ section of this page at the DRTS cash counter and obtain a receipt.
  5. If the vehicle does not currently have a valid license, clients will also be required to pay the license fee (or temporary license).
  6. Present the payment invoice to the licensing officer who will then book an appointment for the vehicle to be inspected.
  7. On the appointed date/time, you should present the vehicle to be inspected by the DRTS Transport Inspector at the Vehicle Testing Station.
  8. If the vehicle fails the inspection, the inspector will inform the client reasons as to why, and the applicants must comply with Inspector's instructions to rectify any vehicle issues that may have caused the failure and book for re-examination if made within 7 working days, no extra costs charged. Only two re-examinations are allowed.
  9. Upon passing the examination, proceed to the Registration & Licensing Officer to collect Road Worthiness Certificate against your identification document.

Eligibility

  • Vehicles three (3) years old and above (before initial registration and upon expiration of existing certificates)
  • Vehicles with a gross vehicle mass greater than 3500kg (within 3 months of being licensed)
  • Public transport vehicles



Fees

The following fee is chargeable;

  • Mini-bus (11 to 15 seats) - P169.00
  • Midi-Bus (15 to 30 seats) - P169.00
  • Bus (30 to 100 seats) - P338.00
  • Train-bus and double-deck bus (above 100 seats) - P338.00
  • Heavy motor vehicles (3500 gross vehicle mass and above) - P 338.00



Validity

Road Worthiness certificates have a different validity period and depend on the category of the vehicle:

  • 1 year for goods vehicles
  • 6 months for passenger transport vehicles
  • 3 months for vehicles being registered or licensed

  • The Ministry of Transport through the Department of Road Transport and Safety inspects all vehicles to ensure that they are deemed roadworthy by issuing them a roadworthiness certificate.
