Apply In Person

1. The application for Motor Vehicle Registration shall be made to the Department of Road Transport and Safety (DRTS) office, which is under the Ministry of Transport and Communications. DRTS Regional Offices Contact Details
2. Applicants are required to collect and complete the Vehicle Registration Form (RV 1). Forms are available for free at the Enquiries Desk at any of the DRTS offices around the country, or directly download it using this link, Vehicle Registration Form-RV 1
3. Submit the duly completed application form, attached to the supporting documentation as mentioned under the “Required Documents” of this page, at any of the DRTS offices around the country Motor Vehicle Licensing Registration section. Any omission of the required documents and information will render the registration process incomplete.
4. Upon receipt of the application file, the DRTS Registration and Licensing officer the correctness and, if all the necessary information and documents have been provided for processing.
5. The Licensing officer will issue the client with an invoice indicating the prescribed fee i.e. the vehicle weight as mentioned on the DRTS fees schedule (Refer to the “Fees” section of this page for details) and shall be subjected to a levy of BWP 50.00, which is to be paid at the DRST cash counter, and obtain a payment receipt.
6. Present the payment receipt to the Registration and Licensing Officer, the vehicle and the owner's particulars will be registered in the Government vehicle registration system.
7. The vehicle registration booklet and vehicle license disk will be drawn up signed and stamped by a senior authorized official and issued to the applicant against his/her identification document.
8. The time frame for processing the application is within the day.

• Duly completed Vehicle Registration Form-RV 1
• Customs clearance (CE 109), obtained from Botswana Unified Revenue Service (BURS)
• Police Clearance Certificate obtained from CID
• Certificate of roadworthiness obtained from DRTS vehicle testing station for:
  • Vehicles 3 years old and above
  • All re-imported vehicles
  • Homemade trailers (obtain chassis number from DRTS before Police Clearance and Road Worthiness testing)
• Applicable Identification document of the Owner:
  • Omang for citizens
  • Residence permit / exemption certificate and passport for non-citizens
  • Certificate of incorporation for companies
  • Certificate of registration for societies
  • Parastatal number for parastatals
  • Guardians ID for a minor (under 16)
• Diplomats should obtain an additional clearance from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on International Cooperation.
• Application form for registration (RV 1) to be filled after all the above requirements are met.

• The vehicle registration book is valid forever, however, it should be updated in case of any modification to the vehicle or change of ownership.
• The vehicle license disk is valid for one year and should be renewed annually, ideally 3 months before expiry.
