Botswana - Apply for Lost Passport


Procedure

Apply In Person

  1. Visit the nearest police station in Botswana, report about the lost passport, and you will be issued with a police report, confirming that you have lost the passport or have an affidavit sworn before the commissioner of oath.
  2. The application for a Lost Passport shall then be made to the Department of Immigration and Citizenship, Headquarter or the nearest Regional/District Immigration Offices, which is under the Ministry of Nationality, Immigration and Gender Affairs or the Botswana mission abroad, for the electronic passport application process Ministry of Nationality, Immigration, and Gender Affairs Office Location & Contact Details
  3. In the case of parent(s) or guardian(s) applying for a replacement of a lost e-passport for persons aged 16 years or younger, bring the child to the office.
  4. The application shall be made in writing using a prescribed application form obtainable at either any of the Department of Immigration and Citizenship, Headquarters, or the nearest Regional/District Immigration Offices in Botswana or Botswana Mission abroad office for abroad application.
  5. The application form shall be filed only in the immigration/consulate office in the presence of an authorized officer, who shall assist the applicant in filling the application when requested by the applicant and this is done so because of security reasons. The form cannot be taken out of the office.
  6. Submit the completed application form, attached to the relevant supporting documentation as mentioned under the “Required Documents” section of this page, to the passport section attending staff at the immigration office or Botswana mission abroad office for consideration.
  7. Upon submission, the application is checked for completeness and correctness by the immigration/consulate officer, if everything is in order the applicant shall be issued a prescribed application fee invoice to make payment against.
  8. The applicant's biometric information is captured by an authorized official, the application is filed for processing and the applicant is issued an acknowledgment slip containing details of the application.
  9. All application files will then be forwarded to the department of immigration and citizenship office for processing in Botswana.
  10. Check the outcome of your application, at the office in which the application was made, after five (5) working days (if applied outside Gaborone), within three (3) working days (if applied in Gaborone).
  11. If the application was successful collect the Passport against, your national identity card and acknowledgment slip.

  • Written letter explaining circumstances under which loss of passport occurred.
  • Complete Affidavit in lieu of a lost passport.
  • Police report confirming the loss of passport.
  • 3 coloured passport-size photos were taken against a white background.
  • Copy of Identification documents.
  • Where a copy of the lost passport is available please attach the same.

Eligibility

  • All Botswana passport holders who have lost their passports are eligible to make the application.




Fees

For lost passport applications, the following charges apply for people older than 16 years of age and those below 16 years of age;

  • BWP1260 for the lost passport
  • BWP1390 for lost passport and express service
  • BWP1520 for lost passport and special service


Note: if the application is filed abroad, the application fee varies from one consulate/embassy to another; please consult with the nearest Botswana mission for more information.




Validity

  • The passport is valid for 10 years after the date of issue and renewable thereafter.

Processing Time

  • If applied within Gaborone the passport takes;
    • A normal service passport takes 3-5 working days to process.
    • Express service passport takes 48 hours to process.
    • A special service passport takes 24 hours to process.
  • If applied outside Gaborone the passport takes; passport takes five (5) working days to process.

Important notes

  • From 8th march 2010, Botswana passports are now e-Passports and will contain a chip that has information such as biometrics and a digital photo. The validity of all Botswana non-electronic passports expired on 31 December 2011
  • It is best to apply for your passport at least 30 days before you plan to travel.
  • The application must be recommended by a citizen of Botswana. The person recommending the applicant must not be an immediate relative.
  • Please note for international travel, passports must be valid for six months or more.
  • This document does not in itself entitle the passport holder to enter into another country, nor consular protection while abroad or any other privileges. However, it does normally allow the passport holder to return to the country where the passport was issued.
  • Rights to consular protection arise from international treaties, while the holder's return to the issuing country depends on the laws prevailing in that country.

Requirements for Passport photographs

  • The photographs must be two in number.
  • The photographs must be taken full face without a hat.
  • The photographs must not be mounted.
  • The size of the photographs must not be more than (35*45mm /1.37*1.77in)
  • The photographs must be printed on normal thin photographic paper and must not be glazed on the reverse side.
