Botswana - Apply for Citizenship By Settlement


Procedure

Apply In-Person

  1. Obtain all necessary documents.
  2. Submit application requirements to the Migration and Visa Unit of the Department of Immigration and Citizenship.
  3. Pay the application fee.


Required Documents

  • Two passport sized photos
  • Certified copy of birth certificate or affidavit in lieu of birth certificate
  • Personal declaration to establish nationality
  • Certified copy of valid residence permits if available
  • Proof that the applicant has been in Botswana for such a period i.e. letter from tribal authority

Eligibility

  • People who have settled in Botswana immediately before 30 September, 1966 and have lived ordinarily as members of a particular tribe or community or have been customarily accepted as a member of a tribe or community qualifies to apply for the service.

  • Citizenship represents the link between a person and a state or an association of states. Possession of citizenship is normally associated with the right to work and live in a country and to participate in political life.

  • It is the mandate of the Ministry of labour and Home Affairs to promote gender equality, provide labour, occupational health and safety, civil registration, migration, citizenship and coordinate graduate internship and vocational training. They are in charge of issuing work and resident permits.
