The application process for the 1-Year Residents Visa will generally take you 3-4 weeks, but much depends on how efficient you can be and how long it takes to get your Interpol report back. This is actually a very physical and involved task requiring visits to various offices and agencies all over the city.
Basically, you will have to get other documents from other places, so initiate your request for residency or visa renewal immediately upon arrival because this will take time, and usually you only have 30 days upon arrival in Bolivia to get all these documents together and present them to Migracin and you must do this prior to the 30 days expiring. The procedure that takes the longest is the Interpol international criminal background check. Begin at Interpol and then continue with the rest.

You must enter Bolivia on a Specific Purpose Visa to apply for residency. Depending on your country of origin, you may need a visa to enter Bolivia. U.S. citizens DO need a visa to enter. If you plan to apply for residency you must not travel on a tourist visa. You will need to enter Bolivia on a Specific Purpose Visa (visa de objeto determinado). The Bolivian consulate in your country can help you process your travel visa.
Once in Bolivia you have 30-Days to complete the application process for the 1-Year Residents Visa (1-Ao Temporal). It can take that long, or even longer, due to having apply for a certificate that confirms your residential address and then having to wait for an INTERPOL report which can take up from between 15 to 30 days.
This enables you to remain in the country for one year during which time you may carry out your economic, sports, or cultural activities (whether paid or not). This visa is recommended for volunteers or social work.
Immigration requirements change frequently in Bolivia and are different for each person or family depending on your country of origin. The costs may also vary by country of origin.
Before your 1-year Visa expires you start to apply for a Visa de 2-Aos Temporal. After that you can apply for the 5-year Visa which is considered permanent residency. Once you have permanent residency you can then apply for citizenship.
