1. Your eID is valid for ten years, before your card expires you will automatically receive a notification card in the post.
2. You must go to the Registry Office of your principal place of residence before the date indicated on this card. In most municipalities, a new eID costs at least 15 euros. The price may vary from one municipality to another: each municipality is entitled to charge an extra local tax. Some municipalities do not charge for the eID.
3. When applying for a new eID, make sure you have the following documents with you:
   1. the notification card;
   2. a recent passport photo that satisfies the conditions indicated on the notification card;
   3. your current identity card (or the replacement certificate from the police if it has been lost or stolen).
4. Three to four weeks after you have submitted your application you will receive a letter stating that your new eID is ready at your local Registry Office. When collecting your new identity card, you must return your old card (or the replacement certificate from the police).

The eID is issued to Belgians over the age of twelve.

Other reasons to renew your card include:

• You are re-registering in Belgium after having been officially removed from the Belgian Population Register.
• You want a card in a different language (this is only possible if you live in a municipality that is allowed to issue identity cards in the chosen language).
• You have lost your identity card, it has been stolen or damaged.
• Your passport photo no longer resembles you.
• You are changing forename or surname.
• You are changing sex.

Holders of an eID may present their card in order to prove their identity and travel in Belgium and other EU countries.

The eID contains a microchip that contains your address and digital certificates in addition to all the visible information. You can use your digital certificates in combination with your PIN code: the authentication certificate can be used to confirm your identity when logging on to a website with your eID; the signature certificate ensures that you can sign electronically

You can already use the eID:

• as a library card;
• as proof of identity for online purchases and sales, when booking a hotel, opening a bank account, etc.;
• as a key to your companys network, to buildings, to secure cupboards, etc.;
• as proof of your age for vending machines for things like cigarettes, the online gaming platform of the National Lottery, etc.;
• as a train ticket
