The driving license is issued as an authority to allow a person to drive a motor vehicle of any class on a road in Barbados.
No person will be allowed to drive a motor vehicle on road in Barbados unless he is the holder of a valid driving license or a learners permit endorsed in respect of that class of vehicle.
Any person driving a motor vehicle on a road is required by law carry his driving license or learners permit, and on being so required by a police officer, produce it for examination.
The driving licence shows compliance with Barbados traffic laws regarding driving.
In Barbados they drive on the left hand side of the road. In order to drive it is necessary to have a Barbadian driving permit which is available from car rental companies, the Ministry of Transport or police stations at a cost of BBD$10.
The permit is valid for one year and to obtain one you must have a valid driving licence or international licence.
Although it is not long since road signs were rather rudimentary the Barbadians are now proud of their new universal signage. Roads are not always good –there are few pavements and there are potholes which it is advisable to avoid. The roads also have more than their fair share of roundabouts. The speed limit is 60 mph or 37 kilometres per hour although it depends which roads you are using as the limit varies. The limits are usually clearly displayed on road signs..
