Apply via Agent
Apply In-Person:
- To Register as Individual in the National Insurance Board, the applicant has to visit any nearest office of the National Insurance Board in his/her state of residence. The address and contact details of branch offices across the country can be found in the following link: address details.
- Visit the office and get an application form to register as individual (Form R4) from the relevant officer.
- You can also download the form from the following link: Registration Form R4
- Complete the application form with appropriate information under relevant sections.
- Attest it with your signature/mark once completed.
- Make sure that you have attached all the documents listed in the “Required documents” section of this page.
- Then, submit it in person to the relevant authority at the office.
- After submission, your application along with the attached documents will be forwarded for further verifications.
- Once all the internal processes are over, the applicants will be notified with the further instructions regarding the registration.
- Upon registration each individual is assigned a National Insurance number.
- Once a number is assigned, the registrant does not have to register again - even if changing jobs, moving to a new island, or changing names.
- After registration, each eligible applicant is also issued an NIB Smart Card.
Required Documents
Bahamian Adult:
- Passport OR
- Birth Certificate along with Voter's Card OR
- Registered/Recorded Affidavit along with a Voter's Card or Passport
Bahamian Child/Student under the age of 18 years:
- Birth Certificate OR
- Passport along with Parent's/Guardian's photo identification (Passport or Voter's Card) OR
- Adoption Certificate/Guardianship letter along with Parent's/Guardian's photo identification (Passport or Voter's Card)
Non Bahamian Adult:
- Current Work Permit along with Current Passport OR
- Original Birth Certificate with a translated copy (where necessary) and a Passport/Current Work Permit.
Non-Bahamian Child/Student ages 5-18 years:
- School letter and
- Birth Certificate OR
- Passport along with Parent's/Guardian's photo identification (Passport or Voter's Card) OR
- Adoption Certificate/Guardianship letter along with Parent's/Guardian's photo identification (Passport or Voter's Card)

Any person engaging in gainful employment in The Bahamas - whether employed on a temporary, probationary, part-time or permanent basis - can register with The National Insurance Board.

Need for the Document
- All persons engaging in gainful employment in The Bahamas - whether employed on a temporary, probationary, part-time or permanent basis - are required to register with The National Insurance Board.
- Registration should be undertaken before, or as soon as possible after commencing work.
- The act of registering and then paying contributions activates for each worker of The Bahamas entitlement to the promise first made to Bahamian workers on October 7, 1974.
- That promise was and is that if he pays the required number of contributions, if he pays them in the prescribed manner and timeframe, and if he meets other conditions specific to the various benefits, he is guaranteed a level of income replacement when he needs it.
Other uses of the Document/Certificate
Upon registration each individual is assigned a National Insurance number which is a unique eight (8) digit number that is distinctive, personal and specifically identifies the individual (the year and quarter of the registrant’s birth; and his/her sex).
