Australian Capital Territory - Apply for Provisional Driver License


Procedure

  1. Attend a Canberra Connect Shopfront and apply for a provisional driver license.
  2. Pass a practical driving test with a government license examiner or undertake training and pass continuing assessment with an accredited driving instructor (the 'log book' system).
  3. If a practical driving assessment is successfully passed in an automatic vehicle then the license will be endorsed with an 'A' (automatic), after 12 months the license holder can have the 'A' condition removed by attending any Canberra Connect Shopfront or the Civic Driver License Service.
  4. If the license holder wishes to have the 'A' condition removed before the 12 month period, then a practical driving assessment must be successfully passed in a manual vehicle.
  5. To obtain a provisional motorcycle license, you must have held your learner license for at least three months and successfully complete the pre-provisional course, including the pre-provisional rider assessment, which is currently provided by Stay Upright Motorcycle Techniques, telephone (02) 6241 3963.

Eligibility

  • The minimum age to obtain a provisional car or motorcycle license is 17.
  • To obtain a provisional car license, you must have held your learner license for at least six months and either pass a practical driving test with a government license examiner or undertake training and pass continuing assessment with an accredited driving instructor (the 'log book' system).

Validity

Provisional licenses are issued for three years.

A provisional license is the next stage of the graduated licensing system. After gaining experience driving with a learner's license for a period of six months, you can obtain a provisional license.
