Apply Online (Registering a vessel)
- To register a vessel, complete and submit the application form, here is the link to the application form Link or for government commercial vehicles, fill this form Link.
- Fill in all the details and attach all important documents as mentioned under the “Required Documents” section of this page.
- The applicant will need to show proof of ownership, the form can be found under the “Required Documents” section of this page. Attach this form to the application form.
- The applicant will have to submit and pay the fees, find the link to fee payment under the “Fees” section of this page.
- Under “Service Requested”, click the option(s) that apply.
- Click on the “Submit and Pay” icon.
- The applicant will be directed to another page.
- Enter details.
- Attach supporting documents and the application form.
- Click on “Validate and Submit”.
- The applicant will be directed to another page, where they will be prompted to enter card details and make payment.
- Click on “Submit”, the application will be forwarded to the relevant authorities.
- The applicant will receive a certificate of the registry by email.
- Alternatively, the applicant can also email the documents, using the following email address: vr-ib@tc.gc.ca.
- The applicant will receive their certificate of registration within 30 working days from the submission of the application.
Apply by Mail/Fax
- The applicant will need to download the application form, click on the link to view the application Link or for government commercial vehicles, fill this form Link.
- Fill in all the relevant details and attach all documents as mentioned under the “Required Documents” section of this page.
- The applicant will need to show proof of ownership.
- Mail all documents to this address: Transport Canada Vessel Registration (AMSED) 330 Sparks Street Ottawa, ON K1A 0N8.
- If the applicant wants to fax the documents, here is the number: 1-833-983-1377
- The applicant will have to make fee payment, this can be done over the phone, contact the number under the “Office locations and contacts” section of this page.
- The applicant can make fee payment by cheque or money order payable to the “Receiver General of Canada”.
- The applicant will receive their ship registration certificate within 30 days from the submission of the application.

Eligibility
For the registration of small vessels:
- The applicant must own a commercial vessel with a gross tonnage of 15 or less.
- The vessel does not require a mortgage.
- The applicant’s vessel does not require an official name.
For the registration of vessels:
- A commercial vessel with a gross tonnage of 15 or more.
- The vessel has a marine mortgage.
- The vessel needs a reserved name.
- The vessel is travelling outside Canada.
Fees
- The applicant will have to pay a fee of 50$ for the registration of small vessels/commercial river rafts.
- For the registration of a vessel, the applicant will have to pay a fee of 250$.
- To reserve the applicant’s vessel name, they will have to pay a fee of 250$. (This is covered by the application fee)

Validity
The registry certificate is valid for a period of 5 years.

Processing Time

Need for the Document
In Canada, commercial boat users are required by law to register their vehicles and is also used as proof of ownership of the boat.

- The boat registration allows the applicant to give a unique name to their boat.
