Alberta - Obtain Commercial Vehicle Registration


Procedure

Apply In-Person:

  1. To obtain Commercial Vehicle Registration in person, the applicant has to visit a registry agent nearest to their location.
  2. List of registry agents’ offices and their contact information can be found in the following Contact link
  3. The applicant has to contact a registry agent who is easily accessible from their location. The agent may require the applicant to visit their office.
  4. While visiting the office, the applicants should carry the documents listed in the “Required Documents” section of this page.
  5. The agent may require the applicant to complete an application form for the registration.
  6. The applicant has to complete the form with required details under the respective sections and attest it with their signature.
  7. Then, all the required documents should be attached with the completed application form. The cost for registering a commercial vehicle ranges from $82 to $164.
  8. While submitting the application form and required documents to the registry agent, the applicant has to make the fees payment through any available mode.
  9. After submitting the application package, the submitted application and attached documents will be assessed and verified.
  10. Processing of the application and assessment of the submitted information takes place for a time period of six to eight weeks.
  11. Upon completion of the assessment and verification, the applicant will be intimated through phone or email to collect the Registration Certificate.

Eligibility

  • The applicant must be at least 18 years of age. Applicants below the age limit can apply by providing a consent signed by their parent/guardian.
  • The vehicle should have been inside Alberta for more than six months.
  • An authorized representative can also apply on behalf of the vehicle’s owner.

  • The applicants are advised to attach all the required documents without any insufficiency, to avoid rejections and delay in processing.

Drivers driving vehicles on a public roadway or owners who have vehicles that are driven on a public roadway in Alberta must obtain a Registration Certificate for their vehicles, from the Government of Alberta.

  • There are additional registration requirements for commercial vehicles. A commercial vehicle transports people or goods and is not used only as a private passenger vehicle.
  • There are 3 classes of licence plates that apply to commercial carriers in Alberta. These plates are different from the ones used on personal vehicles.
  • Each commercial licence plate allows a carrier to perform a particular type of work.
  • Miniature vehicles that are less than standard size can’t be issued a vehicle registration certificate and cannot be driven on public roads. These vehicles may be used on privately owned land only.
