Alberta- Obtain a birth certificate from Germany

Apply By Mail

1. The applicant must contact the Registrar’s Office in Germany, the letter must be addressed to the Registrar of the place/town/village/city, the applicant was born.
2. Click on this link to find the nearest Registrar’s office Link.
3. As indicated on the “German Misson in Canada” website, the correct way to ask for a birth certificate in German is; “Ich bitte um Ausstellung einer Internationalen Geburtsurkunde für ... (first name/middle name/last name), geboren am ... (date of birth) in ... (place of birth). Eltern: ... (name of father) geboren am ... (date of birth) in ... (place of birth) und ... (maiden name of mother) geboren am ... (date of birth) in ... (place of birth).”
4. Write this in the letter.
5. Make sure to indicate the month of birth in letters. (December should be written as December, not 12).
6. The applicant must make sure to enter their postal address as the certificate will be mailed to this address.
7. Fee information will also be sent along with the certificate.

Obtaining a Certificate from a Former Eastern German Territory

1. Contact the office of the Standesamt I (Registrar’s Office) in Germany, here is the address Standesamt 1 Schönstedtstraße 5 13357 Berlin (Mitte) Germany.
2. Full contacts can be found under the “Office Locations and Contacts” section of this page.
3. If the birth certificate is available, it will be sent to the applicant via post, if the record has been destroyed, the standesamt will register a letter saying that the certificate cannot be issued.

Letter addressed to the Standesamt including all information about the applicant.
