Alberta - Apply for Driver License


Procedure

Apply In-person

  1. To apply for a driver’s license in Canada the applicant will need to first get a Class 7 Learner’s license.
    • The applicant will need to visit the nearest registry agent, the applicant can find the nearest agent here registry agent. Follow these steps:
      • Select town/city.
      • Click on search.
      • The applicant will see the address/es of the registries.
    • The applicant will have to pay a fee.
    • The registry agent will check to see if you have good vision.
    • Once the applicant passes these tests, a class 7 license will be issued.
    • The applicant will receive a temporary license which they can use until the license card arrives by mail.
    • Once the applicant receives the license card, they will have to destroy the temporary license.
  2. After 24 months, the applicant is eligible for a class 5 GDL license on a probationary basis, follow these steps to apply:
    • Schedule a test with the nearest registry agent.
    • The applicant can find the nearest registry agent here registry agent
    • The registry agent will inform you of the documents that are needed.
    • The applicant will have to pass a vision test.
    • The applicant will have to give a driver’s test.
    • Once the applicant passes these tests, they can buy the license card.
    • The applicant will be given a temporary license card until the card arrives through mail.
    • Destroy the temporary card once the license card arrives through mail.
  3. After a period of two years and without any suspensions, the applicant can apply for a Class 5 Graduated driver’s license, to apply, follow these steps:
    • Schedule a test with the nearest registry agent.
    • The applicant can find the nearest registry agent here registry agent
    • The registry agent will inform you of the documents that are needed.
    • The applicant will have to pass a vision test.
    • The applicant will have to give a driver’s test.
    • Once the applicant passes these tests, they can buy the license card.
    • The applicant will be given a temporary license card until the card arrives through mail.
  4. Once you receive your class 5 GDL, you’ll need to drive for 2 years and have no license suspensions.
  5. Take a class 5 advance test at the nearest road registry.
  6. Once the applicant passes, they can purchase the full class 5 driver’s license.

  • Military ID


For probationary class 5 GLD:

  • A class 7 learner’s license.
  • Consent form (If you’re under 18 years)
  • Proof that you live in Alberta (Address proof)
  • Canadian proof of residence (Passport)

Eligibility

For a class 7 license, the applicant must be:

  • 14 years of age


For a probationary class 5 license:

  • The applicant has to be at least 16 years of age.
  • Written consent from parents if the applicant is under 18 years of age.
  • The applicant must have a class 7 license with one year of experience in driving.
  • The applicant must be a Canadian citizen/valid work or student visa/have an approved refugee claim.
  • The applicant must be a resident of Alberta.


For a class 5 graduated driver’s license (GDL)

  • The applicant must have a probationary Class 5 GDL.
  • The applicant must have had this GDL for a period of two years without any suspensions.
  • The applicant must be 18 years of age.

  • As of April 1, 2021, Registry Agents have the ability to set the fees they wish to charge for the road tests they deliver.

Need for the Document

  • To legally drive a car/any other vehicle in Alberta/Canada, you’ll need a driver’s licence
  • You must have it with you whenever you’re driving.
