Applying in Person

1. Go to your local Probate Judge or License Commissioner's Office to request a duplicate driver's license.
2. You do not need to pass any examination in order to apply for the procedure, but you are required to present a valid identification document such as a certified birth certificate.
3. Pay the duplicate fee.

For Alabama Drivers who are Temporarily Out of State (Military Personnel, Military Dependents, or College Students)

1. For those who are temporarily staying outside Alabama, you may apply to obtain a duplicate driver's license by completing an application form.
2. Mail the completed form along with your payment (in the form of a money order) and other additional requirements to:
   Driver License Division
   P.O. Box 1471
   Montgomery, AL 36102-1471.

Note: Any person making a false affidavit in obtaining a duplicate driver license may be charged with Forgery (Title 13A-9-3) or Perjury (Title 13A-I 0-102) or both under the Criminal Code of Alabama and punished accordingly by fine and imprisonment or both.

  • For military personnel: enclose a copy of military picture ID card and military orders.
  • For students: enclose a copy of student picture ID card and your current college enrollment.
  • For those who are employed temporarily outside Alabama: enclose a letter (on letterhead) from your employer.

Valid Alabama driver's license holders.

Alabama Drivers who are Temporarily Out of State (Military Personnel, Military Dependents, or College Students), you may apply by post if you have obtained your Alabama driver's license with your picture and signature in the last four years.

Foreign nationals are not eligible to apply for a license by mail. Star ID's cannot be issued by mail.

Duplicate License: $18.50

Note: If you are temporarily staying outside Alabama and applying for the procedure through mail, your payment must be in the form of a money order made payable to the Driver License Division.

Your driver's license is valid for four years after it is issued, you can find the expiration date on the license.

The license may be renewed at any time within 60 days prior to expiration at your Probate Judge or license Commissioner Office.

Alabama law grants a grace period of 60 days after expiration date of a driver's license for the purpose of driver license renewal and the driver license shall be valid for this time period.
