Procedure

NOTE: Applications for International Driver License is only accepted online.

Apply Online - International Driver License (IDL) Online with Images

1. To apply for an International Driver License online, you have to visit the website of Automobile Association of South Africa by clinking: Link
2. In the page that opens, provide the Personal details in relevant fields and click “Next” button.
3. In the License and Destination page, fill the details of your valid South African License and the destination details under relevant fields. After filling, click “Next” button.
4. After that, you have to fill collection details and click “Next” button. Then, upload your valid Identity document and Driving license by clicking “Upload” button.
5. Once done, click “Next” button. Select the check box under ‘Confirmation’ section and take note of the “IDP Amount due” which you should pay when you visit the office for collecting your IDP card.
6. Click “Next” button. Then, summary of your entered details will be displayed. Check once and click “confirm” button.
7. After application submission, it will be forwarded for further verification processes. Once completed with all processes, when the IDP is ready for collection, you will be notified by the office.
8. Then visit the office with all the documents listed in the “Required documents“ section of this page and collect your IDP card.

Eligibility

• Any South African citizen or a resident of SA republic, who wishes to obtain an International Driver License can apply.
• The person applying must be over 18 years of age.
• The person applying must be a valid SA driving license holder and should present it throughout the process.

The cost summary will be provided to you at the time of application itself.

Instructions

• An International Driving Permit is not a stand-alone document or a substitute for a valid driving licence, you must carry your domestic driving licence with your IDP at all times.

• International Driving Permits do not diminish your obligations to conform to the laws and regulations of the countries you visit.

• An IDP may be reissued on the expiry of the old IDP (with a new photograph), but if you are a resident abroad you may need to apply for a local driving licence.

• An IDP gives you an extra form of photo ID along with your personal details and this can be useful if you are ever asked to surrender your passport, which can happen under certain circumstances in some countries.

Need for the Document

• An International Driving Permit is actually sought when one has an intention to drive in the countries other than RSA. But it also serves as valid form of identification in more than 150 countries worldwide and contains your name, photo and driver information in several languages.
• An IDP is a helpful form of identification, even if you do not intend to drive when you travel abroad.

Information which might help

An International Driving Permit can only be obtained from the country where you obtained your driving licence. AASA cannot issue an IDP to citizens of Botswana, Lesotho and Swaziland who are in the possession of a valid driving licence issued in that country, but can issue an IDP to citizens of Namibia who are in the possession of a valid Namibian driving licence.
