Registration for Student (Locally Trained Nurse)

  1. A person in charge of an education provider providing an approved and accredited programme of study shall inform the Nursing Council of Zimbabwe (NCZ); the Registrar of the particulars of any person who enrolls in that programme of study. Nurses Council of Zimbabwe Contact Details
  2. On receipt of the particulars of a person undertaking an approved program of study or part of an approved program of study, the Registrar shall register the person as a student registrant by entering the person’s particulars in the student division of the register kept by the Council.
  3. The Registrar shall not require a person to pay a fee for registration as a student as soon as practicable after registering a person as a student registrant, the Registrar shall give written notice of the registration to the education provider that provided the student’s particulars (Student Registration Number and Indexing Number). As soon as practicable after receiving notice that a student has been registered the education provider shall give written notice of the registration to the student.
  4. The period of registration for a student starts when the student is registered; and expires at the end of the day on which the student completes, or otherwise ceases to be enrolled in, the approved program of study.
  5. Within 30 days of passing the final examinations, a nurse is required to register with the Nurses Council of Zimbabwe. Nurses can continue with studies after their initial graduation, they are required to register and pay for any post-basic qualifications with the Council within 30 days of qualification. Applicants should refer to the “Eligibility” section of this page to confirm eligibility and contact the Council Office to begin the registration process.
  6. Nurses/midwives present to the Nurses Council of Zimbabwe offices with the Clearance letter from the training institution to indicate that they have completed their training period and contract. The NCZ confirms the candidate who has passed the examination by comparing it with the pass list.
  7. The applicant is issued with a Registration Form, carefully completing the forms with appropriate information under relevant sections, once completed applicant should attest their signature under the declaration section.
  8. Attach all the relevant supporting documentation as listed under the “Required Documents” section below, before submitting the complete dossier for verification and processing.
  9. Upon receipt of the application, the registrar shall forward all received registration files for assessment and processing. The registrar will not take responsibility for an incomplete application and shall be denied
  10. All application forms will be reviewed by the Council-appointed registration Committee within four (4 ) weeks of submission but may depend on the volume of applications being reviewed by the Council at the said time. The Council will endeavor, however, to inform the applicant if there is a delay in the review process beyond this time period.
  11. Once the application is reviewed and approved by the Committee, the applicant will be informed and requested to make payment for the Registration/Licensing fees which depend on the category of the nurse. Please refer to this page’s “Fees” section for more information.
  12. The committee shall, in the case of refusal of registration, give a reasoned decision and inform the applicant of his right of appeal.
  13. The applicant will be notified to collect his Registration Certificates, Practicing license, and a Continuous Professional Development logbook, via text or phone call. One is required to bring proof of identification when collecting the documents.
  14. The practicing certificate is subject to annual renewal. All the General Nurses should pay their annual fees by the 31st of March while the rest should pay by the 31st of January. No advance payment is allowed for annual fees as Practicing Certificates are renewed yearly depending on the nurse's conduct.


Registration of Foreign-Trained Nurses and Midwives

  1. Foreign-trained Nurses and Midwives are required to be registered and licensed with the Nursing Council of Zimbabwe for them to be able to practice; he/she is required to show that they have attained the required competency by Council standards. Applicants should refer to the “Eligibility” section of this page to confirm eligibility and contact the Council Registry Office to begin the registration process.
  2. Applicants will be required to collect and complete the Provisional Registration form, issued at the Council website; Council Downloads or directly use this link to download Provisional Registration form
  3. Upon obtaining the registration form, carefully complete the forms with appropriate information under relevant sections, once completed applicant should attest their signature under the declaration section.
  4. Attach all the relevant supporting documentation as listed under the “Required Documents” section below, before submitting the complete dossier for verification and processing to the Nursing and Midwifery Council Registry Office either in person or sent via this council email address:: [email protected]
  5. Upon receipt of the complete registration dossier, the Registrar will check the documents for completeness and authenticity. If everything is in order he shall forward all applications to the Licensing and Registration committee responsible. which shall then verify the applicant's qualifications with the relevant training school and board of nursing/midwifery from the respective country.
  6. Please note; the application shall also be accompanied by all applicable fees and should be deposited as prescribed by the Registrar and proof of payment shared with the Council Registrar's office.
  7. Upon being satisfied with the information provided by the respective institution, candidates will be invited for an oral interview by the Registration and Licensing Committee. Based on the results of the oral interview, successful candidates may be invited to sit a written exam, the examination is organized by the Council.
  8. Upon passing the exams, the applicant will be required to undergo a practical orientation program (clinical placement) in a Teaching, Regional, or any hospital accredited by the Ministry of Health/Council to acquaint themselves with healthcare systems in Zimbabwe.
  9. The Health Profession will be registered as a provisional Nurse/ midwife with the Council Registrar and will be issued a Provisional Registration Certificate, practicing license, Badge, and a Continuous Professional Development logbook.
  10. The applicant will be notified to collect Authorization documents via text or phone call. One is required to bring proof of identification when collecting the documents.
  11. The foreign Nurses/midwives will be required to serve three years of service. After three years of satisfactory service in Zimbabwe, they are transferred from the Provisional register to the Main register.

Late Registration Requirements (This applies to any applicant who wishes to register a qualification one year after the date of completion)

  • Typed application letter for late registration giving reason (signed by the applicant) addressed to the Registrar Nurses Council of Zimbabwe. (attach evidence for the reason where necessary).
  • N.B. Letter to include the applicant’s Registration Number, email address, and contact number(s).
  • A Clearance Letter from the school
  • Letter from school explaining the reason for late registration
  • A completed Application for Registration Form.
  • Attach two (2) recent colour passport-size photographs (with name, I.D. number, and signature at the back) on the caption on the top right-hand corner of the form (if General Nurse, Primary Care Nurse Three (03) Years Psychiatry Mental Health Nurse or State Certified Traumatology Nurse).
  • Comprehensive Curriculum Vitae.
  • Proof of payment of the prescribed non-refundable processing fee.
  • Council may request additional information, if not submitted, the application lapses after 6 months, therefore, the applicant will be required to reapply.


Provisional Registration Requirement (Foreign-Trained Nurses and Midwives)

  • Duly completed and signed: Provisional Registration form
  • Certificate of Good Standing Issued by the appropriate registering authority where you are currently practicing (Issued within the last three months) sent directly to the Nurses Council of Zimbabwe
  • Certified copies of Degrees, Diplomas, and Certificates.
  • Certificate of completion of Internship (where appropriate).
  • Certificate of knowledge of English/Affirmation (attached)
  • Two recent testimonials from professional colleagues (related to the last six months)
  • Transcript of training – nurses and midwives (attached).
  • Record of student practical training – midwives
  • Two certified recent passport-size photographs.
  • Any other supporting documents.
  • Proof of payment of the prescribed non-refundable processing fee must accompany this application

EligibilityEdit

Applicants should meet the following criteria to be eligible;

  • To be of good reputation and commendable conduct.
  • To have never been sentenced in a felony or misdemeanor (for a custodial penalty in a crime involving moral turpitude or breach of trust, unless rehabilitated in either case). In short, not to have a criminal record.
  • Knowledge of the English Language
  • To have attained one of the following academic degrees:
  • A Bachelor of Science in Nursing from one of Zimbabwe’s high institutes, or an equivalent degree elsewhere than in Zimbabwe, which the council recognizes as equivalent to the qualification by examination required by the council.
  • A Diploma from a healthcare institute affiliated with the Ministry of Health/Council (nursing division) or an equivalent degree.

  • The validity of the registration certificate shall be mentioned on the document and while the practice license shall be subjected to renewal and payment of an annual practice fee as may be prescribed by the Council, this should be submitted on time before the lapse of the current practice license, to allow enough time for the renewal due process to be completed.
