Apply In-Person:

  1. To apply for a variety testing in Zambia, the applicant will have to contact the Seed Control and Certification Institute (SCCI) of Zambia, for the main office visit link.
  2. Make sure that you have all the documents that are listed under the “Required Documents” section of this page.
  3. An application form will be provided to the applicant at the Seed Control and Certification Institute.
  4. Once understanding the guideline properly, the applicant has to fill-in all the necessary information in the application form.
  5. For new varieties to be registered and listed in the national catalog they need to pass DUS (Distinctness, Uniformity and Stability) and VCU (Value for Cultivation and Use) tests.
  6. The DUS and VCU tests are conducted by the Seed Control and Certification Institute (SCCI) which is responsible for all variety release procedures in the country.
  7. The variety release procedures are managed by a Variety Release Committee with the SCCI as the Secretariat.
  8. The DUS and NPTs are conducted for a minimum of one or two seasons, respectively by SCCI.
  9. The breeder is expected to provide information about the variety to support data from NPTs.
  10. After the stipulated number of years of testing, the variety owner applies for release and is expected to present data related to VCU and DUS which are verified by independent data from the SCCI.
  11. Upon the satisfaction of the authorities, a provisional certificate will be accessible.
  12. Pay the fee as given in the “Fees” section of this page.
  13. After the completion of the above steps, the required registration certificate will be accessible.
  14. The applicant gets the registration certificate in a stipulated Period of time.

  • The inspection will be conducted by the composition of the release committee including representatives of farmers’ associations, Zambia Seed Trade Association, University of Zambia Faculty of Agriculture, Extension, and Farming systems research, a specialist in plant protection, a breeder, a seed specialist, and seed certification agency as secretariat.
