Registration for Student (Locally Trained Nurse)
- A person in charge of an education provider providing an approved and accredited programme of study shall inform the General Nursing Council of Zambia; the Registrar of the particulars of any person who enrolls in that programme of study. - On receipt of the particulars of a person undertaking an approved program of study or part of an approved program of study, the Registrar shall register the person as a student registrant by entering the person’s particulars in the student division of the register kept by the Council.
- The Registrar shall not require a person to pay a fee for registration as a student As soon as practicable after registering a person as a student registrant, the Registrar shall give written notice of the registration to the education provider that provided the student’s particulars (Student Registration Number and Indexing Number). As soon as practicable after receiving notice that a student has been registered the education provider shall give written notice of the registration to the student.
- The period of registration for a student starts when the student is registered; and expires at the end of the day on which the student completes, or otherwise ceases to be enrolled in, the approved program of study.
- Upon successfully completing the study program, Examination, and clinical placement the student will be eligible to be entered into the council Nursing/midwife roll/register as a profession and is required to show that they have attained the required competency by the Council standards. Applicants should refer to the “Eligibility” section of this page to confirm eligibility and contact the Council Office to begin the registration process.
- The General Nursing Council of Zambia conducts examinations bi-annually for qualified nurses and midwives to practice. The examinations are held in May/June and November/December sessions.
- A candidate who fails the examinations can apply three times (after the first attempt) for re-examination within two years, If the candidate couldn't pass the exam within two years, he/she must take additional training and must bring pieces of evidence from Higher Education Institutions regarding the additional training.
- Applicants shall complete the Registration Form, issued for free at the council registry office or download via the council website Council Registration or directly download it via this link: Application Form for Registration for Nurses/Midwives
- Upon obtaining the registration form, carefully complete the forms with appropriate information under relevant sections, once completed applicant should attest their signature under the declaration section.
- Attach all the relevant supporting documentation as listed under the “Required Documents” section below, before submitting the complete dossier for verification and processing to the Nursing and Midwifery Council Registry Office either in person or sent via this council email address: [email protected] or [email protected]
- Upon receipt of the application, the registrar shall forward all received registration files for assessment and processing. The registrar will not take responsibility for an incomplete application and shall be denied
- All application forms will be reviewed by the Council-appointed registration Committee within four (4 ) weeks of submission but may depend on the volume of applications being reviewed by the Council at the said time. The Council will endeavor, however, to inform the applicant if there is a delay in the review process beyond this time period.
- Once the application is reviewed and approved by the Committee, the applicant will be informed and requested two make all payments for all applicable fees. Please refer to this page’s “Fees” section for more information.
- The committee shall, in the case of refusal of registration, give a reasoned decision and inform the applicant of his right of appeal.
- The applicant will be notified to collect his Registration Certificates, Practicing license, and a Continuous Professional Development logbook, via text or phone call. One is required to bring proof of identification when collecting the documents.
Registration of Foreign-Trained Nurses and Midwives (Permanent)
- Foreign-trained Nurses and Midwives are required to be registered and licensed with the General Nursing Council of Zambia for them to be able to practice; he/she is required to show that they have attained the required competency by Council standards. Applicants should refer to the “Eligibility” section of this page to confirm eligibility and contact the Council Registry Office to begin the registration process.
- Applicants will be required to collect and complete the Registration form, issued at the Council website Council Registration or directly download it via this link: Application Form for Registration for Nurses/Midwives
- Upon obtaining the registration form, carefully complete the forms with appropriate information under relevant sections, once completed applicant should attest their signature under the declaration section.
- Attach all the relevant supporting documentation as listed under the “Required Documents” section below, before submitting the complete dossier for verification and processing to the Nursing and Midwifery Council Registry Office either in person or sent via this council email address: [email protected] or [email protected]
- Upon receipt of the complete registration dossier, the Registrar will check the documents for completeness and authenticity. If everything is in order he shall forward all applications to the Licensing and Registration committee responsible. which shall then verify the applicant's qualifications with the relevant training school and board of nursing/midwifery from the respective country.
- Please note that the application shall also be accompanied by all applicable fees and should be deposited as prescribed by the Registrar and proof of payment shared with the Council Registrar's office.
- Upon being satisfied with the information provided by the respective institution, candidates will be invited for an oral interview by the Registration and Licensing Committee. Based on the results of the oral interview, successful candidates may be invited to sit a written exam, the examination is organized by the Council.
- Upon passing the exams, the applicant will be required to undergo a practical orientation program (clinical placement) in a Teaching, Regional, or any hospital accredited by the Ministry of Health/Council to acquaint themselves with healthcare systems in Zambia.
- Upon successful completion of the required clinical placement, the Health Profession will be registered as a provisional Nurse/ midwife with the Council Registrar and will be issued a Provisional Registration Certificate, practicing license, Badge, and a Continuous Professional Development logbook.
- The applicant will be notified to collect Authorization documents via text or phone call. One is required to bring proof of identification when collecting the documents.
- The foreign Nurses/midwives will be required to serve three years of service. After three years of satisfactory service in Zambia, they are transferred from the Provisional register to the Main register.
Apply Online
- A trained midwife who wishes to be registered and licensed with the General Nursing Council of Zambia (GNCZ), using a browser applicant should visit the GNCZ Website and click on the “Access Online Service Portal” tab.
- Make sure you are eligible to make this application. The “Eligibility” requirements are mentioned in the eligibility section of this page.
- Upon entering the portal’s homepage, log into your GNCZ online portal account, using your registration credential (Email and Password). If you don’t have an account, you have to create one by clicking on the “Sign Up for Online Service” hyperlink.
- Under the “Register for Online Services” menu, input the required information.
- Select “STUDENT” or “PRACTITIONER” under the “SELECT CATEGORY” option.
- For students Enter the student index number, ID number, and email address
- For practitioners enter the Registration Number, ID number, and email address.
- Before clicking on the” Register for Online Service” tab
- Enter your personal details and press save. Ensure that you enter your correct email address. Create a unique username and password.
- Click on the tab “Registration and Licensing tab”
- Click “Application for practice license”
- Fill in work experience, academic qualifications, knowledge of rules, and other Nursing /midwifery license sections.
- Upload scanned documents in their respective places as sited on the site and press “Next”
- Choose the examination center.
- Enter the transaction number indicated in the payment slip. The payment date if payment was deposited to the bank.
- Submit your application and print the application notification.
- The license is usually ready after a period of 30 days. Notification for collection will be made through email and text messages. One is required to collect the license in person from the council offices. One is required to carry proof of identity during collection.
Please Note:
- Any applicant for a practicing nursing license, who is aggrieved by any decision of the Committee to refuse to issue the license or to specify any condition therein may appeal against that decision to the Minister in writing and shall be delivered to the Minister not later than 30 days immediately after the day, on which the decision complained of was communicated to the applicant.

- Certified copies of Professional qualifications such as Certificates, Diplomas, and Degrees whichever may be applicable.
- A copy of the updated Curriculum vitae
- A certified copy of a National Passport
- A certified copy of an academic transcript where applicable.
- A copy of the registration certificate with the local regulatory body in your home country.
- A certified copy of the Practicing License or Practicing Certificate whichever is applicable.
- 2 passport-size photos of natural hair without makeup or jewelry.

EligibilityEdit
Applicants should meet the following criteria to be eligible:
- To be of good reputation and commendable conduct.
- To have never been sentenced in a felony or misdemeanor (for a custodial penalty in a crime involving moral turpitude or breach of trust, unless rehabilitated in either case). In short, not to have a criminal record.
- To have attained one of the following academic degrees:
- A Bachelor of Science in Nursing from one of Zambia’s high institutes, or an equivalent degree elsewhere than in Zambia, which the council recognizes as equivalent to the qualification by examination required by the council.
- A Diploma from a healthcare institute affiliated with the Ministry of Health (nursing division) or an equivalent degree.

- The validity of the registration certificate shall be mentioned on the document and while the practice license shall be subjected to renewal and payment of an annual practice fee as may be prescribed by the Council, this should be submitted on time before the lapse of the current practice license, to allow enough time for the renewal due process to be completed.
