Procedure

Apply In-Person:

1. To apply for a mining prospecting license in Zambia, the applicant will have to contact the Mines and Minerals department office of your area, for the main office visit link.
2. Make sure that you have all the documents that are listed under the “Required Documents” section of this page.
3. An application form will be provided to the applicant upon visiting the Mines and Minerals department office.
4. Once understanding the guideline properly, the applicant has to fill-in all the necessary information in the application form.
5. Submit an application with necessary attachments to the Mines and Minerals department office.
6. Pay the fee as per given in the “Fees” section of this page.
7. Approved application will be submitted directly to the Ministry of Mines and Minerals in Lusaka.
8. In almost 45 days, an offer letter will be accessible.
9. Collect the offer letter from the office and pay area charges which takes around one day.
10. Upon completion of above steps the applicant gets the license in 90 days.

Required Documents

• Application with a full description with geographical coordinates of the area of land over which the licence is sought but not exceeding 29,940 cadastre units and represented by complete and not partial cadastre units.
• A statement of the minerals that are going to be searched.
• An environmental management plan including a proposal for the prevention of pollution, the treatment of waste, the protection and reclamation of land and water resources, for eliminating or minimizing the adverse effects on the environment or prospecting operations.
• The proposed prospecting operations and an indication of the investment commitment in the proposed prospecting operations.
• The applicant's proposals with respect to the employment and training of citizens of Zambia.
• The applicant's proposals for the promotion of local business development.
• A tax clearance certificate.
• Any other information as may be prescribed by the Minister.
• Proof of adequate financial resources, technical competence and experience to carry on effective prospecting operations.
• Programme of prospecting operation is adequate and makes proper provision for environmental protection.
• Proof of written consent if the land is within a National Park, Game Management Area, National Forest or Local or is a Bird Sanctuary.
• Proposed prospecting area, mining area or permit area.

Eligibility

• Applicants should be a bona fide national of the country.
• The company should be a citizen-owned company.
• The applicant(s) must be of legal age.

Fees

• Application Fee : ZMK 360,000.
• License Fee : Area Charges:
• Year 1 and 2 ZMK 10,080 per Sq.Km per year.
• Year 3 and 4 ZMK 20,120 per Sq.Km per year.
• Year 5 and 6 ZMK 40,320.per Sq. Km per year.
• Year 7 onwards ZMK 80,640. per Sq.Km per year.

Validity

• This licence will be valid for two years.
• The license can be renewed for a maximum of 7 years.

Instructions

• Holder will face legal consequences if anytime it's found that he/she has contravened the conditions of the licence, permit.

Need for the Document

• The granted license allows the holder to conduct prospecting in the license verified area.

Information which might help

• In the process of prospecting, direct observation is widely practiced.
• However, the modern prospector can also employ a combination of geologic, geophysical, and geochemical tools to provide indirect indications for reducing the search radius.

Other uses of the Document/Certificate

• The licence confers on the holder exclusive rights to carry on exploration in the permitted area for the minerals specified in the licence and to do all such other acts and things as are necessary for, or incidental to, the carrying on of those operations.
