Procedure

Apply In-Person:

1. To apply for conversion or exchange of foreign driver's license, in Zambia, the applicant applying on behalf of the recipient will have to contact the driving licence testing centre (DLTC) of your area, for the main office visit link.
2. Application form will be available in the driving license office centre.
3. Make sure that you have all the documents that are listed under the “Required documents” section of this page.
4. Go to the driving licence testing centre (DLTC) in the province where you obtained your driving license in the first place.
5. Complete the Application for exchange of a driving licence form at any driving licence testing centre.
6. Complete the notification of change of address or particulars of person in the form.
7. You will have to hand over your foreign driving licence or driving permit when you receive the Zambian licence.
8. The driving licence testing centre will issue the driving licence if it is satisfied that you are the owner of the foreign driving licence.
9. Pay the fee as given in the “Fees” section of this page.
10. Collect the license from the office in a stipulated time.

Required Documents

• National registration card or Passport
• Valid foreign driver’s licence.
• Authentication of driver’s licence from the issuing office or embassy.
• Roadworthy motor vehicle proof according to class applied.
• Four black-and-white ID sized photographs
• Current foreign driving licence
• Proof of permanent residency in Zambia
• Proof that you were not a permanent resident of Zambia at the time the foreign licence was issued (for example, you can produce a passport, permanent residence permits or visa)
• A letter of translation of the licence by a competent authority if the licence is not in one of the official languages of Zambia
• Confirmation from a driving licence issuing authority that you have a valid driving licence (stating the codes and relevant categories of vehicle that the person is permitted to drive) that has not been cancelled or suspended
• In case of an International Driving Permit (IDP), you must submit the driving licence on the authority of which the permit was issued
• Proof of postal and residential address
• If you stay at an informal settlement, you must bring a letter with an official date stamp from the ward councillor confirming your postal and residential address

• Renewal fee: K279.00.

Validity

• A Zambian ordinary driving licence has a validity period of 5 years. e.g. Birth Certificate Valid Forever

Instructions

• It should be translated into one of the official South African languages.
• The licence should be accompanied by a letter of validity obtained from the relevant embassy and a translation if the licence is not in an official language of South Africa.
• The licence must have your photo and signature.
