Washington - How to Replace your Driver License or Instruction Permit

License eXpress Account

If you have a License eXpress Account you may log-in using your computer, smartphone or tablet to begin your application. If you do not have one, you must create an account then wait for the confirmation email to activate your account.

License eXpress Account

Pay with a Visa, MasterCard, or American Express debit or credit card (no gift cards).

Note: At this time, you cant replace your instruction permit in License eXpress.


Get a replacement online

You will need:

  • Your driver license or ID card number
  • Your Social Security number - last 4 digits
  • Visa, MasterCard, or American Express
  • Email address and/or printer
  1. Online Link
  2. Pay with a Visa, MasterCard, or American Express debit or credit card (no gift cards).
  3. After completing the process, print the receipt, and it will serve as your temporary card. Note: Since it doesnt include your photo, you cant use it as identification.

To those applying online, your temporary license or ID won't include your photo and can't be used for identification. If you need one with a photo, you must visit a driver licensing office.

You should receive your license in 2-4 weeks. If you don't get it within 45 days, contact DOL by sending them an email [email protected].


In Person

  1. Visit a driver licensing office.
  2. Present proof of identity.
  3. Do not forget to bring your glasses or contacts, if you need them to take the eye exam.
  4. Pay the replacement fee.


Notes:

  • Your new card will be mailed to the address on your driver's file, make sure your file is updated.
  • The new card will show the last photo the license office took.
  • If you're replacing a vertical-format card because youre under 21, your replacement will still be vertical. You must wait until you renew and you're 21 years old to get a license in the standard horizontal format.

You must be over 18.

You can't get a replacement online if:

  • It expires within 3 months, better to renew it instead
  • Your license or permit isn't valid
  • You've replaced it in the last 12 months
  • You're under 18 years old
  • You need to replace a commercial driver license (CDL)
  • You moved out of state
  • You changed your name from what's printed on your license
  • Your record shows you have any of the following:
    • A dishonored check
    • Unpaid traffic fines
    • Unpaid reissuance fee
    • A suspension
    • A revocation
    • A cancellation
