Apply In Person

1. To Apply for a Substance Abuse Counsellor License, the applicant has to approach the U.S Department of Treasury (Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau) link
2. Obtain a bachelor's degree in a related field such as psychology, social work, counselling, or a closely related discipline. Some states may require a master's degree for certain levels of licensure.
3. Also, the applicant must complete the examination successfully, in the National Certified Counsellor (NCC) exam or the Alcohol and Drug Counsellor (ADC) exam.
4. An application form will be provided to the applicant by the concerned officer.
5. The applicant must fill in all the necessary details in the application form. (Incomplete applications are not accepted)
6. Make sure that the applicant has attached all the necessary documents that are mentioned in the “Required Documents” section of this page.
7. The applicant has to attach the photocopies of the required documents along with the application form while submitting.
8. Submit all the documents with the completed form to the concerned officer.
9. The applicant has to pay the prescribed fee ranging from $100 - $200
10. After receiving the application, the concerned authority will check the submitted application and document set. If all are in place, the application will be accepted.
11. All applications are processed within a reasonable time, having regard to the particular circumstances of each application, including the completeness of information and documents submitted to the authority by the applicant.
12. The authority may seek additional information from an applicant if this is necessary to assess the application. The authority does not need to deal further with an application until the applicant has provided this additional information.
13. The officer may require a criminal background check or fingerprinting as part of the application process. Ensure you comply with all background check requirements.
14. Once the process gets completed, the applicant gets a call from the office regarding the application.
15. If your application is approved, ensure that you follow all regulations and requirements specified in the license.
16. This entire process can be completed within 2 – 3 weeks or as per the timeline advised by the respective department authority.
