Need for the DocumentEdit

Some countries require a document as evidence that a person is free to marry. This document is called a single status certificate and is issued by the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages.

About single status certificates

  • You can use a single status certificate as proof that we do not hold any record of marriage in the Victorian registers, between two specific dates. The first date indicates when you were free to marry. This date is:
    • The date of your eighteenth birthday (if you have never previously married and were born in Victoria or began living in Victoria as a child)
    • The date you began living in Victoria (if you have never previously married and were born outside Victoria)
    • The date your last divorce became final and absolute (if you have been previously married and divorced)
    • Note. You must provide a copy of your divorce certificate with your application.
    • The date your last spouse passed away (if you have been previously married and widowed)
    • Note. You must provide a copy of your spouse's death certificate with your application.
  • The second date is generally one week before the date your application is received by the Registry.
  • If you have lived outside Victoria as an adult, you may also need to contact the Registry office of any other state, territory or country where you have lived, and apply for a single status certificate from them as well. Check with the authorities of the country where you plan to get married before applying for other certificates.
  • We recommend you keep all Registry-issued documents safe and secure.
