Yellow Fever is preventable by a safe,effective vaccine.Yellow fever vaccination is one of the mandatory requirements when traveling to some parts of the world. International regulations require proof of Yellow Fever vaccination for travel to and from countries which are classified as yellow fever endemic.One is issued with a yellow fever certificate after receiving the yellow fever vaccinations.

  1. One needs to get the vaccination a minimum of 10 days before travel; otherwise you will be refused boarding. This is because the vaccination needs to mature.
  2. You can get the vaccination from any Ministry of Health Port Public Health Offices at border entry points, sea ports and airports. A fee of Ugshs. 100,000 is charge for the vaccine.
  3. If you are in Kampala you can go to Kampala City Hall to get the vaccine shot. One can contact them in advance to make an appointment or just walk in. A fee of UgShs 100,000 is charge for the vaccine.
  4. One can get the vaccination at approved Private Hospitals as well as in hospitals and clinics run by the county governments; the cost of the vaccine may vary between the private hospitals and county clinics. Private hospitals charge almost twice the cost offered in public clinics and hospitals.
  5. It takes a few minutes to get the injection and receive your certificate. Once you get the injection, you are given a small yellow booklet- the yellow fever certificate.
  6. You need to keep it next to your passport and other travel documents because it is proof that you have adhered to all the travel requirements.

EligibilityEdit

  • Any person entering or leaving Uganda above nine months of age must be in possession of a valid Certificate of Vaccination against Yellow Fever
  • Individuals who are in airport transit for more than 12 hours.
  • The under mentioned persons are exempted from production yellow fever vaccination certificate:
  • Infants below the age of six months
  • Any person suffering from some chronic illness and has poor resistance and is thereby exempted from being vaccinated.
  • Crew and passengers of an aircraft transiting through an airport located in yellow fever infected area provided the Health Officer is satisfied that such persons remained within the airport premises during the period of stay.


FeesEdit

  • A fee of Ugshs 100,000 at Kampala City Hall and Ministry of Health and Public service Offices and Sub-county clinics.
  • Private Hospitals charge varying fees. The costs are usually higher than the fees charged by the government institutions.


ValidityEdit

A yellow fever vaccination certificate is valid only, if it conforms to the model.

  • It is only valid beginning ten (10) days after the vaccination.
  • The vaccine has lifetime validity. However some countries may require to renew your vaccination before entry

Processing TimeEdit

  • Vaccination Certificates are issued immediately, however in some cases may have to wait for a certificate for 30 minutes. It takes a few minutes to get the injection and receive your certificate.

InstructionsEdit

  • The vaccine is recommended for anyone above 9 months old.
  • It is advisable to visit a clinic in your country, about six weeks before your flight to get the vaccination. If you are short of time, schedule the vaccination day about ten days prior to your trip so that it can be effective.
  • Private hospitals charge almost twice the cost offered in public clinics and hospitals. It takes a few minutes to get the injection and receive your certificate.
  • In Uganda, you need a yellow fever certificate if you are arriving from a yellow fever zone.

Need for the DocumentEdit

  • If you are travelling from a yellow fever endemic country, the Uganda Government will require a yellow fever certificate from you before entry into the country.
  • If you leave Uganda for another country, chances are you will be required to produce a yellow vaccine certificate, as Uganda is a listed as a yellow fever endemic country.
  • If you are planning to travel to an area in Uganda where you may be at risk of yellow fever, make sure you are vaccinated before making your trip.

Information which might helpEdit

  • You will need the certificate, if you travel from Uganda to other countries in the Yellow Fever belt such as other sub-Saharan African countries.
  • Certain countries with tropical climates, for example Australia, India, and Thailand for example, will demand the certificate on entry if you have visited a country in the Yellow Fever belt, such as Uganda, within the previous six days.
  • A vaccination waiver can be issued by your medical practitioner if the yellow fever vaccine is contraindicated for medical reasons. Be aware that problems may arise when crossing borders and the waiver may not be honored.

Other uses of the Document/CertificateEdit

  • The document may be required by as proof that one has received the vaccination and is not carrying the disease.
  • This may also be proof that one is not prone to the disease.
