ProcedureEdit

  • An animal health course or a veterinary medicine course shall only be offered in a registered institution or in a faculty of veterinary medicine.
  • A person or institution is not allowed to offer training in Animal Health or Veterinary Medicine unless they are registered by the Board.
  • An institution or person is to offer the training courses in Animal Health or Veterinary Medicine using the curriculum approved by the Board.

Apply In-Person

  1. An institution desiring to offer courses of training leading to the award of animal health degree, diploma or certificate, or degree of Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine shall after being registered by the relevant body, apply to the Uganda Veterinary Board for approval by submitting an application .you can also visit their website on the following link Uganda Veterinary Board
  2. This can be done by visiting the UVB Offices and obtaining an Application for Approval for Training institution offering Animal Health Course.
  3. You will be required to pay the appropriate application fees together with the inspection fees and submit the payment receipt. The amount of fees to be paid can be found under the "Fees" section of this page or at UVB registration.
  4. The Uganda Veterinary Board shall, on receipt of the application will carry out inspections of the institution and if satisfied that it conforms to set standards, will approve the institution for the courses proposed.
  5. The Uganda Veterinary Board shall inspect approved training institutions from time to time. The Board shall, in every five years, inspect institutions for purposes of approval.
  6. The license may be cancelled at any time when the Board establishes a breach of any provisions of the Regulations.

Need for the DocumentEdit

  • Training institutions offering animal health course should be approved with the Uganda Veterinary Board in order to carry out their operations in Uganda.
  • This helps to curb sub-standard facilities, which spring up and lower the standards of animal health courses being offered in Uganda.


Information which might helpEdit

  • In general the standards for institutions offering animal health training should be as follows:-
  • A training institution desiring to offer courses for animal health shall have adequate physical facilities and equipment that meet the following minimum standards-
  1. A lecture theatre for every class.
  2. A laboratory for each major discipline.
  3. Seminar rooms and other teaching spaces which shall be adequate in number and size for the instructional purposes intended and the number of students enrolled.
  4. Administrative and faculty offices.
  5. A teaching animal hospital with the minimum standards set out in regulation 24 and which has adequate teaching, laboratory, research and clinical equipment for examination and diagnostics of all animals used by the institution;
  6. An animal farm with the full spectrum of animal species to give the students adequate exposure in a ratio of at least two animals per student-admission for cattle, sheep, goat and pigs and one flock of two hundred poultry for ten student-admission and at least one fish farm and one rabbit farm.
  7. A veterinary library and
  8. Access to facilities offering food and accommodation for students in the vicinity.

  • The College of Veterinary Medicine, Animal Resources and Bio-Security (COVAB) at Makerere University offers a five-year program leading to a Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine degree (BVM) and has graduate training programs, research, and development outreach services.
  • Most Ugandan veterinarians do not have adequate “hands on” training in investigating and responding to outbreaks. As a result, the University now offers a new Master of Veterinary Preventive Medicine program that is supported by the African Field Epidemiology Network (AFENET).
  • There is a new training program funded by USAID called the RESPOND Project to implement a partnership with Makerere University School of Veterinary Medicine, the African Institute for Strategic Animal Resource Services and Development, Uganda’s MAAIF, and AFENET.
