Registration for Student (Locally Trained Nurse)

  1. Upon passing the Uganda Nurses and Midwives Council National Examination, successful candidates are required to apply for registration and licensing after the release of the results with the Uganda Nurses and Midwives Council – UNMC Office. UNMC Contact
  2. Nurses/midwives present to the Nurses Council offices with the Clearance letter from the training institution to indicate that they have completed their training period and contract. The UNMC-Registry office shall confirm the candidate who has passed the examination by comparing it with the pass list.
  3. The applicant is issued with a Registration Form, carefully completing the forms with appropriate information under relevant sections, once completed applicant should attest their signature under the declaration section.
  4. Attach all the relevant supporting documentation as listed under the “Required Documents” section below,
  5. Upon receipt of the application, the registrar shall forward all received registration files for assessment and processing. The registrar will not take responsibility for an incomplete application and shall be denied
  6. All application forms will be reviewed by the Council-appointed registration Committee within four (4 ) weeks of submission but may depend on the volume of applications being reviewed by the Council at the said time. The Council will endeavor, however, to inform the applicant if there is a delay in the review process beyond this time period.
  7. Upon being satisfied with the information provided, candidates will be invited for an oral interview by the Registration and Licensing Committee. The applicant will be required to Schedule an interview for Registration/ Enrollment as Nurses or Midwife with the council. The interview schedule booking list will be uploaded on the council website.
  8. Candidates are required to endeavor and come on the appointed date; candidates whose names do not appear on the list should wait for the next appointment list to be released by the council.
  9. Based on the results of the oral interview, successful candidates will be informed and requested to make payment for the Registration/Licensing fees which, dependent on the category of the nurse, within 72 hours of approval. Please refer to the “Fees” section of this page for more information.
  10. The committee shall, in the case of refusal of registration, give a reasoned decision and inform the this page’s “Fees” section
  11. The applicant will be notified to collect his Registration Certificates, Practicing license, badge, and a Continuous Professional Development logbook, via text or phone call. One is required to bring proof of identification when collecting the documents.


Registration of Foreign-Trained Nurses and Midwives (Permanent)

  1. Foreign Trained Profession health practitioners are required to be registered and licensed with the Nursing Board for them to be able to practice; he/she is required to show that they have attained the required competency by the Ministry of health/Council standards.
    • Applicants should refer to the “Eligibility” section of this page to confirm eligibility and contact the Council to begin the registration process.
  2. Upon receipt of the complete registration dossier as listed under the “Required Documents” section below, the Registrar will check the documents for completeness and authenticity. If everything is in the order he/she shall forward all applications to the Registration and Licensing committee. which shall then verify the applicant's qualifications with the relevant training school and board of nursing/midwifery from the respective country.
  3. Please note; the application shall also be accompanied by all applicable fees and should be deposited as prescribed by the Council and proof of payment shared with the Council office.
  4. Upon being satisfied with the information provided by the respective institution, candidates will be invited for an oral interview by the Registration and Licensing Committee. Based on the results of the oral interview, successful candidates may be invited to sit a written exam, the examination is organized by the Council.
  5. Upon passing the exams, the applicant will be required to undergo a practical orientation program (clinical placement) in a Teaching, Regional, or any hospital accredited by the Ministry of Health/Council to acquaint themselves with healthcare systems in Uganda.
  6. The Health Profession will be registered as a Provisional Nurse/ midwife with the Council and will be issued a Provisional Registration Certificate, practicing license, Badge, and a Continuous Professional Development logbook.
  7. The applicant will be notified to collect Authorization documents via text or phone call. One is required to bring proof of identification when collecting the documents.
  8. The foreign Nurses/midwives will be required to serve mandatory service years. After a satisfactory service in Uganda, they are transferred from the Provisional register to the Main register.


Please Note:

  • Any applicant for a practicing nursing license, who is aggrieved by any decision of the Council to refuse to issue the license or to specify any condition therein may appeal against that decision to the Minister in writing and shall be delivered to the Minister not later than 30 days immediately after the day, on which the decision complained of was communicated to the applicant.

EligibilityEdit

  • To be of good reputation and commendable conduct.
  • To have never been sentenced in a felony or misdemeanor (for a custodial penalty in a crime involving moral turpitude or breach of trust, unless rehabilitated in either case). In short, not to have a criminal record.
  • To have attained one of the following academic degrees:
    • A Bachelor of Science in Nursing from one of Uganda’s high institutes, or an equivalent degree elsewhere than in Uganda, which the Council recognizes as equivalent to the qualification by examination required by the Council.
    • A Diploma from a healthcare institute affiliated with the Ministry of Health/Council(nursing division) or an equivalent degree.

  • 120,000/= Enrollment fee or US $ 200 for Non-Ugandans
  • 150,000/= Registration fee or US $ 200 for Non-Ugandans
  • 50,000/= Additional Diploma fee for RCN or US $ 50 for Non-Ugandans
  • 13,000/= Professional ID Card
  • 1,000/= Continuing Education Diary
  • 5,000/= Professional Code of Conduct
  • 10,000/= Nurses Act (1996)
  • 25,000/= Midwifery Handbook

ValidityEdit

  • The validity of the registration certificate shall be mentioned on the document, however, the General practice license shall be valid for three (03) years, while that of the private practice license shall be valid for one year and must be renewed by 31 March of each year.
  • These licenses shall be subjected to renewal by paying a renewal practice fee as may be prescribed by the Council, this should be submitted on time before the lapse of the current practice license, to allow enough time for the renewal due process to be completed.
