Uganda - Apply For Extension of Research Permit.

Apply In-Person
- You can apply for a research extension by filling in an Application for Authority for Extension of Research in Uganda. This form can be obtained from your affiliate institution.
- Fill in the application form and send the completed research extension Form to the affiliating institution for endorsement. This can be done by courier service or e-mail.
- The application for the research permit renewal should be submitted in two (2) copies through the Head of the affiliating Institution, to reach the ;

- This should be done at least three (3) months before the expiry of the permit.
- The research permit renewal application forms must be accompanied by the following:-
- A comprehensive progress report and a justification for continuation of Project (two (2) copies).
- A letter from the sponsor (two (2) copies)
- A letter from the affiliating institutions supporting the application for renewal.
- Payment of a renewal fee to the UNCST will be required before a research permit is renewed.
- Therefore make payments of renewal as required. Payment details have been given in our “Fees section”
- Use the following bank details to make the payments.
- Uganda Shillings Account
- Bank standard Chartered Bank
- Account title: Uganda National Council for Science and Technology (UNCST)
- Any branch of Standard Chartered Bank
- Account numbers: 8705611811400 (US Dollars) and
- 0105610632101 (Ugandan shillings)
- Attach the payment receipt to the application document before submission.
- You should note that; a research permit may be renewed for a period not exceeding one year at any one time for short term projects of a duration not exceeding 3 years, and two years for long term projects exceeding 3 years.
- Once you have made the submission, wait for official communication from the Head of Research Division. The review process can take at least one month to complete.
- If the review is successful, you will be granted with an extension for your research.
Note:Applicants should make their payments to the UNCST bank accounts and are encouraged to make cash payments to avoid additional bank fees. An official receipt is issued once the UNCST receives a stamped copy of the bank deposit.

EligibilityEdit
- Students, Private individuals, Public Institutions or Private Institutions; either Ugandan or Non-Ugandan carrying out research in Uganda and are in need of an extension of their research period are eligible to make an application.
- One should possess a valid/ expired research permit to apply for an extension.
FeesEdit
- Research Administration and Clearance fee of $300 USD, or its equivalent in Ugandan shillings, to register a research proposal.
The permit fees and extension fees are the same for East Africa Community (EAC) Citizens.
- Student/Attachment/Undergraduate/Diploma.... Ugsh.40,000
- Research (Academic) Masters.... Ugsh.400,000
- Research (Academic) PhD.... Ugsh.800,000
- Research (Individual/Post-Doctoral).... Ugsh.200, 000
- Research (Public/Private Institutions).... Ugsh.350,000
- Research (Private Companies).... Ugsh. 700,000
- Extensions.... Same as above.
- The UNCST will not register the protocol or issue a research permit until the fees has been paid.
- Projects that extend beyond the initial five (5) year period are required to pay $300 USD for the extension.
- Ugandan students are only required to pay a fee of $50 USD.
ValidityEdit
Permits are valid for the entire duration specified for a project. . However, the fee covers a research period not to exceed five (5) years.

- Research extensions will enable you to continue to carry out your research, once the validity of your research permit elapsed.
- It’s illegal to undertake/ or continue undertaking research in Uganda without a valid research license.

- All applicants, excluding Ugandan students registered for study in local institutions, are responsible for paying this fee.
- Applicants must submit a completed research extension three months before the expiry of the permit.
- A renewal fee is supposed to be paid.
- A research permit may be renewed for a period not exceeding one year at any one time for short term projects of a duration not exceeding 3 years, and two years for long term projects exceeding 3 years.
- Applicants are responsible for paying fees to the Uganda National Council for Science and Technology (UNCST) for the research permit and for the ethics committee (EC) (research ethics committee (REC) in Uganda) review.
- The Uganda National Council for Science and Technology (UNCST), operating under the Ministry of Finance Planning and Economic Development as mandated by the UNCST Act, oversees and coordinates research and development in Uganda as well as EC registration and accreditation.
