Licenses to drive are commonly referred to in Trinidad and Tobago as Driver's Permits. Driver'sPermits are issued by the Licensing Authority, which is governed by the Ministry of Works and Transport. In order to legally operate any motor vehicle in Trinidad and Tobago, only when it is on public-owned-roads, the operator of the motor vehicle must be in possession of a valid Driver's Permit on their person and is legally endorsed for that class of vehicle. Follow these steps to acquire your driver’s permit :

  1. The first step in obtaining a driver’s permit for either a Class, 1, 2 or 3 entails is by acquiring a Provisional Permit valid for one year. Which have got several steps mentioned in (information which might help) section below.
  2. Take a vision test and upon passing the vision test, you will be issued with the following;
    • Provisional Permit
    • Study Guide and Highway Code
    • Knowledge Test Appointment
    NOTE: Only applicants who passed the knowledge test/regulations, will be given an appointment for the driving test. Applicants who have failed the knowledge /Regulation or Driving Test and wish to apply for re-examination are required to pay $175.00.
  3. Upon Passing the Driving Test, you will be issued the following:-
  • Driver’s Permit - $500.00
  • Certificate of Competence - $ 35.00

(The fees are paid after passing the Driving Test)

  2. Applicants must provide any two forms of ID (Electoral Identification Card, Birth Certificate or Passport) 
  3. An Affidavit or Deed of Poll (if the name on the Birth Certificate and other documents differ).

Motor Vehicles in Trinidad and Tobago are classified under law as following:

  • Class 1: Motorcycles
  • Class 2: Wheel tractors
  • Class 3: Light motor vehicles
  • Class 4: Heavy motor vehicles
  • Class 5: Extra heavy motor vehicles
  • Class 6: Motor omnibuses
  • Class 7: Motor vehicles not specified in Classes 1 to 6.

When the applicant is issued his/her driver's permit, the colored background of their photo would be determined by the highest class of vehicle that they are legally allowed to drive. The background colors are as follows:

Need for the DocumentEdit

  • Application Form No.4 must be completed
  • Applicants must provide any two forms of ID (Electoral Identification Card, Birth Certificate or Passport)

  • Three (passport size photographs (portraits with green background). The photographs taken should not be taken more than six months before the date of the submission of the application. 
  • A fee of $210.00 (Provisional Permit - $35.00 & Study Guide & Highway Code - $175.00) 
  • For a Class 2 application or an applicant who is differently abled is required to complete “Form of Medical Certificate” No. 12
    • (The applicant must produce a recent passport size photograph prior to the application.) 
  • Applicants are required to perform a Vision Test
