Procedure

1. Applications to obtain a National ID Card are processed at the National Identity Card Office.
2. Applicants will need to fill the National ID card Application form and have their picture taken during registration.
3. They will also need to provide a supporting document in the form of a Passport or Driver's License or Birth Certificate.

Note: The information provided by the applicant during registration is required to be accurate and true. If it is later proved that information provided is false, the applicant will be held liable and charged a fine of $10,000 or imprisonment.

Eligibility

Residents of Tonga.

A person is a resident in Tonga if he is 14 years of age or more, and:

• has been present in Tonga for the preceding 6 months;
• has entered Tonga intending to remain there for not less than 6 months; or
• has been present in Tonga for a cumulative period of 6 months within the preceding period of 12 months.

Fees

New applications for National ID card are free of charge.

Validity

The National ID card is valid for 5 years from the date that it was issued.

The expiration date of the card is stated on the card. Renewals of expired cards are free of charge.

Other uses of the Document/Certificate

The National ID card is a document which contains the cardholder's information and image as a means of proof of identity.

The front side of the National ID card displays information such as the cardholder's personal ID number, name, date of birth, sex, nationality, a personalized picture, signature and the expiration date of the card.

At the back, the card displays the cardholder's residential address, driver's license (if provided during registration) and the serial number of the card.

The ID card is a more convenient and efficient proof of identity document which you are able to carry around with you in your pocket compared to the passport and birth certificate.
