Procedure

Apply In Person

1. To Obtain a Custom Broker License, the applicant has to approach the U. S Customs and Border Protection link
2. Identify the Export Control Classification Number (ECCN) or other relevant export control designations for your goods. You can use the Commerce Control List (CCL) published by the Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) to determine if your product requires an export license.
3. The customs broker license examination is a rigorous test that covers various topics related to customs laws, regulations, and procedures.

5. The customs broker exam is offered twice a year, typically in April and October. You must register and pay the exam fee to take the test.
6. Once you pass the customs broker examination, the applicant has to visit the office.
7. An application form will be provided to the applicant by the concerned officer.
8. The applicant has to fill in all the necessary details in the application form. (Incomplete applications are not accepted)
9. Make sure that the applicant has attached all the necessary documents that are mentioned in the “Required Documents” section of this page.
10. The applicant has to attach the photocopies of the required documents along with the application form while submitting.
11. Submit the application form and the documents to the authorized officer.
12. The applicant has to pay the prescribed fee as requested by the authority.
13. After receiving the application, the concerned authority will check the submitted application and document set. If all are in place, the application will be accepted.
14. Then the application will be processed further.
15. Once the process gets completed, the applicant gets a call from the office regarding the application.
16. As part of the licensing process, the CBP will conduct a background check to ensure you meet the eligibility requirements.
17. If your application is approved and all requirements are met, you will receive your customs broker license from the CBP.
18. This entire process can be completed within 3 - 4 weeks or as per the timeline advised by the respective department authority.
