Tamil Nadu - Register a Marriage and Obtain Certificate

Registration of Marriage and Issuance of Certificate of Marriage is done in the Sub Registrar Office.
Apply In-Person:
Marriage Registrations Categories in Tamil Nadu as:
- Marriage Registration under Hindu Act
- Any of the following shall come within the jurisdiction of the Registrar Residence of Bride and Bride Groom and Place of Solemnization.
- Marriages solemnised under Hindu customs/ non-customary
- Both of them should be Hindus/Sikhs/Jains/Buddhists.
- Marriage Registration under Tamil Nadu Marriage Act
- Memorandum should be filed in duplicate.
- Requirements of personal law should be fulfilled.
- Memorandum should be filed with Sub Registrar within 90 days of Marriage.
- With payment of additional Fees it can be filed after 90 days of Marriage.
- The marriages performed in Tamil Nadu only can be filed. The memorandum should be filed with the Sub Registrar in whose jurisdiction the place of Solemnization took place.
- Special Marriage Registration
- Marriages to be solemnized before the Registering officer or already solemnized can be registered under Special Marriages Act
- Any of the following shall come within the jurisdiction of the Registrar Residence of Bride and Bride Groom and Place of Solemnization.
- Notice of intended marriages should be given in triplicate to the jurisdictional Sub Registrar for registration
- The notices will be displayed in the Sub Registrar Offices where bridegroom and bride have permanent residence.
- If no objection is received to the marriage within 30 days from the date of notification, the marriage shall be separately / registered, with the bride and groom having 3 witnesses at the time.
- Marriages shall be solemnized/registered after 30 days and before 3 months from the date of Notice. If the time exceed 3 months, fresh notice has to be filed.
- Christian Marriage Registration
- Solemnised by Priests, Licensees and Marriage Registrars.
- Extract of marriages registered by licensed Marriage Registrars and Priests can be obtained from the office of the Inspector General of Registration, 100-Santhome High Road, Chennai - 28.
General Methods:
- To Register a Marriage Applicant, approach the Sub Registrar Office which is Located near their area.
- After the Registration you can obtained the Marriage Certificate.

- Each Marriage should be Register under above said any one of categories.
Apply Online:

- If you are a new user register yourself, if you are a existing user you can directly login into the portal by entering user name and password.
- Now click on the "Registration” option and select the "Marriage Registration" button.
- Under "Marriage Registration" option select the "Tamil Nadu Marriage" button and click on "Create Application"
- After 150 days, you cannot able to register in Tamil Nadu Marriage Act. So you can use Hindu Marriage Application or Special Marriage Application.
- In the next page, click on the "Proceed" button for Registration.
- Fill up the Registrationform such as Details of Marriage, Husband details, Wife details, Witness details and Other details appropriately.
- After entering all the details click on the "Create Application" button.
- Now click on the "Proceed for Payment" option
- Fill up the payment details and click on the "Submit" button
- Click on the respective bank to proceed for payment.
- After successful payment, you have to fix your appointment date.
- Under "Marriage Registration" tab click on "Search Application" button.
- Enter your appointment date and select the timing slot as per your wish.
- Now click on "Submit" button.
- On the Said date, applicant along with witness need to be present before the registrar.Please submit the printout as obtained along with required documents.
- Please follow the guidelines of the authorities to complete the formalities for Registration.
- Applicant and witness will be asked to sign on the registry to endorse their marriage.
- The certificate will be issued on the same day for the already solemnize marriage.
- In case of the application made in advance (before marriage) for the issuance of certificate, authorities will look for any objection from public for thirty days and then the process will be executed on the day of marriage by a assigned authority and the certificate will be issued as applicable
Required DocumentsEdit
- Completely filled application form, duly signed by both bridegroom and bride
- Original wedding card.
- Proof of address of bride and bridegroom – Passport/ Voter ID Card/ Driving License/ House Rent Agreement/ Telephone Bill or Electricity Bill. The address proof must be in one of the applicant’s name.
- Age proof of bridegroom and bride – Mark sheet of 10th standard with the date of birth mentioned on it or Passport.
- Identity proof of bridegroom and bride – Passport / PAN Card / Voter ID card / Driver’s License.
- 2 passport sized photographs each of bridegroom and bride
- 2 photographs of the bride and bridegroom wearing their marriage dress and are clearly seen taking part in the marriage ceremony (preferably with their families).
- Separate marriage affidavits in prescribed format from bridegroom and bride
- Aadhar card
- Affidavit in case of name change of bride after the marriage.
- The newspaper in which the information of the bride’s name change was published.

EligibilityEdit
- Bridegroom must have completed 21 years of age.
- Bride must have completed 18 years of age.
- Bridegroom and Bride may be from any religion but should be citizen of India.
FeesEdit
- For the Registration of a Marriage which will be exclusive of any other fees levied by devasthanam for marriages in temples Rs 100/-
- Application fees for registering a marriage at any place outside the office of the marriage Registrar Rs 20/-
- For the Registration of a Marriage, if memorandum is presented for registration within a period of 90 days from the Date of Marriage Rs 100/-
- For the Registration of a Marriage, if memorandum is presented for registration within a further period of 60 days after the expiry of the period of 90 day Rs 150/-
For the Registration of a Marriage, if memorandum is presented for registration after 150 day Rs 1150/-
ValidityEdit
