Switzerland - Convert or Exchange Foreign Driver License

If the country is an EU or EFTA country or Andorra, Australia, Israel, Japan, Canada, Republic of Korea, Croatia, Morocco, Monaco, New Zealand, San Marino, Singapore, Taiwan, Tunisia, USA, you can simply convert your foreign license into a Swiss one and you are exempt from a Kontrollfahrt, a control ride with a driving assessor to ensure you know and are following the Swiss standards of driving.
- Please approach the nearest office location in your area with the information provided under the section Office Locations & Contacts of this page.
- Include a coloured passport size photo and a vision test.
- Take both personally to the road traffic department or the residents registration office.
- Dont forget to also bring your Swiss ID and/or your Auslnderausweis the original, no copies.
- If you have a credit card format Auslnderausweis, you also need to bring a confirmation of residence (Wohnsitzbesttigung) showing the entry date into Switzerland.
- Make sure you have the documents that are listed under Required Documents section of this page.
- The driver license department authorities should be able to help you out in converting your foreign driver license to Swiss driver license.
- Once youve handed in all the documents, your new Swiss license will be sent to you by mail. Driving licenses from EU/EFTA states are returned to the country of issue. Other licenses might get a stamp not valid in Switzerland.

- Original foreign driving licence
- Official translation of the licence if it's written in non-Latin characters
- Two colour passport (35x45mm) pictures - your full name must be written on the back, and you cannot be wearing anything covering your head, or a uniform
- Proof of residence or residence visa
- A filled-out foreign licence exchange application form which can be obtained from the driving license authority in Switzerland.

You can exchange your driver's licence to a Swiss one without taking any tests if:
- Your licence is from an EU/EEA country
- The exchange has been requested before five years of residency in Switzerland
A practical test is required for those with licences from: Andorra, Australia, Canada, Korea, Croatia, Israel, Japan, North Korea, Monaco, New Zealand, Saint-Martin, Morocco, Taiwan, Tunisia, USA and Singapore
If you have a licence from any other country, then both the theory test and the driving test will have to be passed. These tests cost 40chf and 100chf, respectively (with minor price variations depending on which canton you live in).
