Switzerland - Apply for Provisional Driver License
ProcedureEdit
- Attend a first-aid course and obtain a first-aid certificate which is valid for six years. You may ask your cantons road traffic office about where you can enroll.
- Fill up an application form for a provisional license. You may download the form from your cantons road traffic office website or personally obtain one from the traffic office. Your cantons residents office might also be able to give you a form.
- Submit your completed application form along with all other required documents.
- Once your application is confirmed you can now apply to take the theory test. It will be much easier if you apply online, to do this visit your cantons road traffic office website.
- Once you pass the theory test, your provisional licence will be issued to you.

Average range of costs to obtain a category B licence at the first attempt:
- Eye test: CHF 10 to 15
- First aid course: CHF 100 to 200
- Theory handbook: approx. CHF 30
- Theory test: CHF 30 to 50
- Provisional licence CHF 50 to 100
- Compulsory theory course: CHF 200 to 280
- Driving lessons (45 to 50 Min.): CHF 80 to 90
- Practical driving test: CHF 120 to 130
- Driving licence: CHF 35 to 50

Need for the DocumentEdit
A driver's license/licence or driving licence is an official document which states that a person may operate a motorized vehicle, such as a motorcycle, car, truck or a bus, on a public roadway.
For applicants who are applying for a driver's license for the first time, they must first apply for a provisional license. The provisional license will allow them to drive under the supervision of someone over 23 years of age and who has held their driving license for at least three years.
