InstructionsEdit

National Board of Student Aid or Centrala studiestdsnmnden (CSN)

Financial aid (studiestd) is money you can receive to help you pursue your studies, it can be in a form of a grant or a loan. It is up to you whether you would like to apply for a grant or you will take out a loan which you will need to payback sometime in the future.

Receiving financial aid: It will either be the government or one of its agencies who will make the decision which studies qualify you for financial aid. Approved Swedish studies appear in the Study Support Ordinance (Swedish Code of Statutes 2000:655) and its annex.

You cannot receive financial aid for:

  • contract education
  • post-graduate studies if you are or have been a doctoral student, or if you have received an educational grant for doctoral students
  • private studies, for example if you study for an exam without being enrolled in school
  • Swedish for Immigrants

Applying for a student aid: You will need to use your electronic ID when you apply for student aid. With your electronic ID you can sign and submit your application without delay on CSN's website. It's fast and you don't need papers and stamps. With an electronic ID you can easily use our services in Mina sidor. You can order an electronic ID from your bank or from Telia with no costs.

To those who do not have an electronic ID, apply for student aid with your personal code. Processing time can be longer since you will have to print your application or order a printout to be able to sign it. After completing and signing the form, send the signed application by post to CSN.

When can you apply

You can apply for student aid at any time during the year. However, you can only receive student aid dating back four weeks, calculated from the week when CSN received your application. You can also apply for student aid if you do not yet know whether you have been accepted onto your preferred course. If you are planning to study for several semesters, CSN recommends you to apply for the full academic year. You can only apply for one year at a time.

If you fall ill after starting your studies, your application for student aid must have been received by CSN before the first day of illness in order for you to receive student aid during the period of illness.

2. City or County of Birth.

Need for the DocumentEdit

Designed to help students pay for university/college tuition, books, and living expenses, student loan differs from other types of loans with its interest rate substantially lower and repayment of the loan may be deferred while the student is still in school.

Some banks offers this specific type of loan to their customers. A student loan can also be obtained through a government student loan program, this may not be the case in all countries so it will be better if you will check first if such program exists in your country.

Following is a guide on how students can apply for a loan or seek financial aid in Sweden.
