Eligibility

Remember that it is Swedish regulations in Sweden. You must be 18 years old to drive a car.

The rules on when a license can be taken away by the police or withdrawn by the Transport Agency also applies to foreign driving license. Other important parts of driving license law and regulation also applies to foreign license.

Exchange of license from EEA States

You may switch your license from one EEA State to a Swedish license, if the license is valid in Sweden and you are a permanent resident of Sweden.

Your residence in a State shall be deemed to be permanent, if you are staying at least 185 days each calendar year:

1. Because of personal and occupational ties,or
2. Because of personal ties (close bond between person and the place where you live).

If you are staying in several places (in two or more states) due to professional extension in one and personal ties in another, the permanent place of residence is considered to be the place to which you have personal ties, provided that you regularly return there .

Attendance at a university or school shall not cause the permanent settlement changed.

Exchange of license from Switzerland or Japan

A driving license from Switzerland or Japan may be to exchange for a Swedish license. To change, you must meet the personal and medical requirements for driving license and a permanent resident of Sweden (see the definition of permanent residence above). You must apply for a replacement within one year from the time you were registered in Sweden.

Payment of Transport Agency fees

You should first use the pre-printed payment slip that Transport Agency provides, and specify the OCR number if the payment is done over internet. OCR (Optical Character Reading) is a series of numbers that are used to enable the payee to know who has paid a particular bill.

Please do not submit proof of your payment. We get information about your payment directly from the bank.

Have it printed payment card come away you will find, for certain fees, OCR number on the letter or form that un-joined.

Validity

Your driver's license must be renewed every ten years if you have a driver's license with jurisdiction AM, A1, A2, A, B or BE. If you have a license with higher permissions (C1, C1E, C, CE, D1, D1E, D, DE) license must be renewed every five years to remain valid.

Need for the Document

If you hold a driving license issued in another country, in some cases you may be allowed to use it in Sweden

A driving license issued in an European Economic Area State is valid in Sweden as long as it is valid in the country where it was issued, and have not been exchanged yet for a Swedish license. You may also be a tutor at a private practice using your foreign driver license, but only if you are capable of conducting driving lessons.

Only licenses issued from one EEA State,Switzerland or Japan can be exchange.

Driving licenses from non-EEA countries

For a driving license issued in a country outside the EEA will be valid in Sweden, it must be valid in the country where it was issued, and not having been replaced by a Swedish License. The license is not valid if you have been registered in Sweden for more than a year.

Note:

The license must be designed in accordance with international agreements (conventions in 1949 and 1968 on the road).

If the license is not formed according to the rules, nor is written in English, German or French, it applies together with a certified translation. The translation must be in English, German, French, Swedish, Danish or Norwegian.

If there is no photo on the license applies only together with an identity document with photo.

A driving license from a country outside the EEA may not be exchanged for a Swedish license.

Transport Agency may declare a foreign driving license valid in Sweden for some time for the same reasons that a Swedish driver's license may be revoked. The police can confiscate a foreign driving license in the same way as a Swedish license.

Transport Agency may in some cases replace a foreign driving license for a Swedish even though the holder has not applied for it. Then the Swedish driving license revoked. If there are special reasons, the Transport Agency to give the license holder a warning instead of refusing to recognize the foreign driving license in Sweden.

Transport Agency can also issue a preliminary decision on warning. It applies only if the license holder approves the decision within a certain time.

Warning instead of recall

Sometimes the person who will get his license revoked instead receive a warning announced by the Transport Agency. This means that the Transport Agency is writing to you and tell you that you got a warning, and that this is a sufficient measure instead of the license will be revoked.

If you have a warning in the past and you are guilty of several traffic violations or offenses, warning may lead to stronger assessment of your holdings of licenses. The risk is that your driver's license revoked.

Transport Board is able to announce a preliminary warning if it can be assumed that you will accept the warning. A preliminary warning is no decision until you have approved it. If the preliminary warning is approved, the Transport Agency's decision is final. If the preliminary warning is not approved, you get the opportunity to explain the event, a so-called opinion.
