Apply In-Person:

  1. To apply for a Child Support Grant in person, the applicant has to visit the nearest office of the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA).
  2. Please click the following link for the contact details of the SASSA office in your province: Link
  3. Visit the nearest office of SASSA and obtain the application form to apply for a child support grant, from the respective department.
  4. Make sure that you have all the documents listed in the “Required documents” section of this page.
  5. Complete the application in front of the SASSA officer who issues the application form at the premises of the SASSA office itself, with required and relevant information.
  6. Now, submit the application with all the required documents to the SASSA official for further proceeding.
  7. You will be provided with a receipt as a proof of the application submission. Please keep it safe.
  8. After necessary verification and validation processes, if your application is approved, the grant which you applied for will be rewarded to you properly, from the date of application.
  9. If your application is refused and you are not satisfied with the reason stated, you can appeal to the Minister of Social Development, at the National office of the Department of Social Development.

Required DocumentsEdit

  • Identity document of the applicant. If not:
  • Birth certificate of the child
  • Maintenance receipt proof for child
  • Income certificate
  • Child Placement approval order issued by the court
  • Marital status proof of the applicant
  • Death certificate of parent(s) (if any)
  • Missing report from police (if the parent(s) is missing)


In case of absence of ID and birth certificate:

  • Completed affidavit in SASSA standard format in front of Commissioner of Oaths(not an SASSA official)
  • Sworn statement by reputable person
  • Proof of application for ID and/or Birth certificate in DHA
  • Temporary ID issued by DHA (if any)
  • Baptismal certificate
  • Road to health clinic card
  • School report

EligibilityEdit

  • The person applying must be a South African Citizen or permanent resident and he/she must be the primary caregiver of the child.
  • The applicant must not be earning more than R48 000 per year if you are single. If you are married, your combined income should not be above R96 000 per year.
  • The concerned child must be living with the primary caregiver who is unpaid to take care of the child.

InstructionsEdit

  • Application forms are not available online, but you can get them from your nearest (SASSA) office.
  • If you found struggles in filling the application form, the SASSA official should help you filling the form.
  • SASSA can decide if the child’s grant must be reviewed. Your income as declared when you apply for the grant will form the basis for this decision.
  • You will be notified three months in advance of the date on which the review will take place or the date on which the life certificate (proof that you are still alive) is due.
  • If you receive your money through the bank, an institution or procurator, you are required to fill in a life certificate for the child at the SASSA offices every year.
  • The grant may get suspended if there is any change in your circumstances, after a review outcome, if you fail to co-operate when the child’s grant is reviewed, when you commit fraud or misrepresent the child.
  • The grant may get suspended if there was a mistake when the child’s grant was approved or if the child is no longer in your care.
