South Africa - How To Replace damaged, lost or stolen driving licence card

Apply In-Person:

  1. To apply for replacing damaged, lost or stolen driving license in person, the person who needs the replacement should visit the nearest Driving License Testing Centre (DLTC).
  2. The nearest DLTC can be visited with the help of the contact links available in “Office Locations & Contacts” section of this page. Please find the link according to your Municipality under the appropriate province.
  3. Visit the nearest DLTC and get the application form (DL1) which will be available at the DLTC. Or click to download link
  4. Please make sure that you have all the documents with you that are mentioned in the “Required documents” section of this page, when you visit the DLTC.
  5. Fill all the required details under relevant sections of the application form. You will have to complete another form for notification of change of address or particulars of person or organisation (NCP) at the DLTC.
  6. Then, submit the completed forms and required documents to the concerned authority at the office. Please pay the prescribed fees along with the submission of application form or as directed.
  7. After submission, you will be asked to undergo an eye test at the DLTC and your fingerprints will be taken.
  8. You will be issued with a temporary driving license card (at an additional cost) initially which you should use during the waiting period for the issuance of replacement.
  9. The application and submitted documents will be forwarded for further verification and validation processes.
  10. Once all the processes are over, your replacement will be issued with prior notification.


Apply Online

  1. The National Traffic Information System of South Africa instructs only Gauteng residents to apply online for replacement of their driving license cards.
  2. The link of online portal for driving license application is as follows link
  3. Visit the link and click on “Book now for Driving License Test” option.
  4. You will be redirected to a page where you can apply for a new driving license.
  5. You will have to fill all the fields under the tabs “License Type and category” and “Identify Applicant”.
  6. Then click on “Next” button to proceed. In the further steps, do as directed and complete an application for driving license card replacement.
  7. Then submit your application with all the required documents and pay the prompted fees. Visit the DLTC on the intimated date and time to attend an eye test.
  8. After the test, your fingerprints will be taken. You will be issued with a temporary driving license card (at an additional cost) initially which you should use during the waiting period for the issuance of replacement.
  9. Your application and submitted documents will be forwarded for further verification and validation processes.
  10. When your license card is ready for collection, you will be notified after which you can visit the DLTC where you submitted the application and collect your new driving license.

  • Please find the appropriate municipality under your province to get the contact details accordingly from the links provided. With the help of the contact details, you will get to know the nearest testing centre for license.
  • The centre can be contacted for exact fees details for application of license and please confirm with the DLTC that how many photos they require before you have photos taken.
  • The eye test can also be done at an optometrist of your choice but the results should be brought and submitted to the DLTC.
