South Africa - How To Apply for a roadworthy certificate

Apply In-Person:

  1. To apply for a Roadworthy certificate in person, the applicant must visit the nearest Vehicle Testing Station in his/her province.
  2. The contact links for each province in South Africa are listed in the “Office Locations & Contacts” section of this page. Please click the link of your province and look for a nearest Municipality in your location.
  3. Contact the Municipality and get details about nearest Vehicle Testing Station according to your location.
  4. Visit the nearest Vehicle Testing Station and obtain the Application for Certification of Roadworthiness (ACR) form to apply for a Roadworthy Certificate, from the concerned department.
  5. Make sure that you have all the documents listed in the “Required documents” section of this page and that you have taken your vehicle to be tested along with you.
  6. Now, complete the application form and submit it to the concerned authority at the Testing Station, along with all the required documents.
  7. After submission, the authority will check for legibility of the application and the validity of the attached documents.
  8. Then, the vehicle for which certificate is applied, will be put into roadworthy test at the Vehicle Testing Station.
  9. At the end of the test, if the vehicle satisfied all the test qualities, the roadworthy certificate will be issued to the applicant at the test premises itself on receipt of prescribed fees.

  • The vehicle to be tested should be registered already and the applicant should have the Certificate of the vehicle Registration while appearing for the test.
  • Any person possessing a valid South African Identity document and a motor vehicle used for public transport or transporting heavy loads (except buses), can apply.

ValidityEdit

  • Any motor vehicle used for public transport or transporting heavy loads (except buses) should be tested for its roadworthiness every year before renewal of its license. A bus must be tested every six months.

Need for the DocumentEdit

  • A Roadworthy test examines whether a motor vehicle is safe to be driven on the South African roads. All the aspects and standards of the test are set by the South African constitution.


Information which might helpEdit

  • If you are the owner or operate a private vehicle with a gross vehicle mass less than 3 500 kg (mainly cars and bakkies) you are not required to obtain an annual CoR. The only time you must obtain a CoR, by law, is during a change of ownership.
  • If you are the owner or operate a vehicle with a gross vehicle mass greater than 3 500 kg (mainly trucks and buses) or one less than 3 500 kg that you operate for reward (mainly light delivery vehicles, taxis and minibus taxis), you are required by law to obtain a CoR every 12 months, except for buses. Owners or operators of buses are required to obtain a CoR every 6 months.
  • A roadworthy test must be conducted every time a vehicle changes ownership. The test, which is a legal requirement, takes 30 minutes and ensures vehicles meet the safety standards defined by the SABS.
  • No registration certificates or vehicle licences will be issued to new owners without valid roadworthy certificates.
