South Africa - How To Apply for a Temporary Driving Licence

Apply In-Person:

  1. To apply for a Temporary driving license, the person who needs the license should visit the nearest Driving License Testing Centre (DLTC).
  2. The contact links for each province in South Africa are listed in the “Office Locations & Contacts” section of this page. Please click the link of your province and look for a nearest Municipality according to your location.
  3. Visit the nearest DLTC and obtain the application form for Temporary driving license from the respective department. Else, click on the following link to download the application form: Link
  4. Make sure all the documents listed in the “Required documents” section of this page when you visit the DLTC.
  5. Now, fill the application form as required. Mark with an ‘X’ which corresponds to “Temporary driving license” field in the “List of possible transactions” segment of the form above the part A.
  6. Also, specify that you want change of “Driving license document” under the “Notice of change of” segment.
  7. Then, proceed to fill the application form as applicable to your requirement. Also, complete the notification of change of address or particulars of person or organisation (NCP) form, at the DLTC premises.
  8. Now, submit both the forms and required documents at the concerned department in the DLTC.
  9. Then, an eye test for the applicant will be conducted at the testing center. You will have to pay the prescribed fees for the application.
  10. After all the verification and validation processes got over, you will be issued your Temporary driving license on the same day of application.

  • Proof of postal and residential address (Utility bill)
  • Receipt of booking fee
  • Affidavit confirming the applicant’s residence (in case of lack of utility account)

  • Please find the appropriate municipality under your province to get the contact details accordingly from the links provided. With the help of the contact details, you will get to know the nearest testing centre for license.
  • The centre can be contacted for exact fees details for application of license and also issuing fees of license cards.
  • Please confirm with the DLTC that how many photos they require before you have photos taken.
  • The applicant may have an eye test performed by a qualified optometrist and submit the form at the testing centre.
