South Africa - How To Apply for a Learner's Licence

Apply In-Person:

  1. To apply for a driving license, the person who needs the license should visit the nearest Driving License Testing Centre (DLTC).
  2. The contact links for each province in South Africa are listed in the “Office Locations & Contacts” section of this page. Please click the link of your province and look for a nearest Municipality according to your location.
  3. Visit the nearest DLTC and obtain the application form for Learner’s license from the respective department. Else, click on the following link to download the application form: Link
  4. Please fill the application carefully with appropriate information. Fill the part A with details of the applicant and a photograph of the applicant should be pasted on the right side in part A.
  5. Specify the code of license that you require or the type of vehicle for which you want learner’s license and other details as required in the part B of the application form.
  6. Also fill in the required details in part C and read carefully the Declaration part or part D of the form before attesting the application form with date.
  7. Then, submit the application form along with the documents listed in the “Required documents” section of this page at the concerned department in the DLTC. Also, pay the prompted fees.
  8. So, your application for booking a test date for Learner’s license will be put into necessary processes and after that, you will be informed of the test date and you will receive a receipt for the payment you made.
  9. Note that you should be present at the DLTC on the specified date and time of the test with the booking payment receipt and Identification Document which should presented at the DLTC.
  10. At the test premises, you will undergo an eye test and a written test will be conducted to assess your basic knowledge on motor vehicles and road signs.
  11. Then, if you pass the test, you will be directed to pay fees for the issuance of the Learner’s license. On the same day, the Learner’s license is issued to the applicant.

The National Traffic Information System of South Africa instructs only Gauteng residents to apply online for their Learner’s licenses.

  1. The link of online portal for Learner’s license application is as follows: Link
  2. Visit the link and click on “Book now for Learner’s License Test” option.
  3. You will be redirected to a page where you can apply for a Learner’s license test.
  4. You will have to fill all the fields under the tabs “License Type and category” and “Identify Applicant”.
  5. Then click on “Next” button to proceed. In the further steps, do as directed and schedule a date and time for the license test.
  6. Then submit your application and pay the prompted fees. So, your application for booking a test date for Learner’s license will be put into necessary processes and after that, you will be informed of the test date and you will receive a receipt for the payment you made.

EligibilityEdit

  • The person applying should possess at least one valid Identification document.
  • If the applying person is 65 years or older, he/she must also complete a Medical certificate form (MC), which is also available at the DLTC.

  • Before you write the learner’s licence test, you must study road signs, motor vehicle controls and road rules to have a basic knowledge of a motor vehicle and road signs.

  • The applicant may have an eye test performed by a qualified optometrist and submit the form at the testing centre.
