SOUTH AFRICA – HOW TO APPLY FOR HOME SCHOOLING
- Parents, who want to offer Home education to their children, are advised to register in the Provincial Educational Department through Electronic Application forms, available in the official website of the Department of Basic Education. Applicants are not encouraged to visit the office of Provincial Educational Department at any occasion.
Apply Electronically
- To apply for Home Schooling electronically, the applicant or parent of the children must visit the Home education programme page in the official website of Department of Basic Education by clicking the following link:Link
- On the right side of the page, the electronic application forms will be available for each province in South Africa. Click on the application form link for your province and download the application form.
- Application form for your province can also be downloaded by the links provided in the “Documents to Use” section of this page.
- Open the application form and in the first page, you will find the required documents that should be attached along with the application form. Or you can find the list of documents required in the “Required documents” section of this page.
- Arrange certified copies for all the documents then scan those documents and save the soft copies in your PC. Now, start filling the form with relevant details.
- Complete the electronic form by typing the correct details in the text box, tick marking the check boxes and using the “Please select” drop-down menus for selecting the appropriate options.
- After completing, click on the “Submit” button. If you have completed the form appropriately and filled all the fields correctly, you will receive an outlook email after clicking the “Submit” button.
- In the email, attach all the required documents and it to the sender email address itself. In case of not receiving the email, save the application form after completing and compose an email consisting of the application form and documents required.
- Send the composed email to the Home Education Co-ordinator’s Email address of your province or contact your Provincial Education Department and get information that to whom the email should be forwarded. Forward the same to the concerned official.
- If your email has been received, the official will send an acknowledgement mail to the parents. Keep checking on the official to confirm if your email has been received.
- The Provincial Home Education Coordinator/ duly authorized official will contact you to arrange a home visit for directing you in the process if required and verifying if the provided information is appropriate by completing a verification form with the parent.
- The application will be forwarded to the concerned officials and authorities for further verification processes after the home visit.
- After verification, if the application has been approved, the applicants will be informed about the approval over telephone and a Registration letter or certificate will be issued by post, to the applicant.

- Certified copy of Parents’ ID
- Certified copies of Passport or Study/work permit or Asylum document (foreign nationals)
- Copy of last school report ( for children who were in school previously)
- Certified copy of transfer certificate (if applicable)
- Copy of immunisation card (for first admission)
- Weekly schedule table (including contact time)
- Breakdown of terms/year (196 days per year)
- Detailed description of the education programme
- Certified copy of the learner’s birth certificate
- Assessment document or referral letter from Medical Practitioner (learners with special needs)
- Motivation for home education in writing by the parent
P.S: All the documents must not be older than three months

EligibilityEdit
- Any parent, who wishes to provide education for their children at home itself and is capable of doing so, is eligible to apply.
- The parent must be aware of the rules and regulations set by the Department of Basic Education for home education.

InstructionsEdit
After your child has been registered for Home Education you must keep the following:-
- record of attendance
- portfolio of the child’s work
- up- to- date records of the child’s progress
- portfolio of the educational support given to the child
- evidence of the continuous assessment of the child’s work
- evidence of the assessment and or examination at the end of each year
- evidence at the end of grade 3,6 and 9, that shows whether your child has achieved the outcomes for these grades

- Particulars of the tutor (if applicable)
Need for the DocumentEdit
- Home Education is programme alternatives to attending public or independent schools where a parent of a learner of compulsory school going age may provide education for his/her own child/children at home. If you want to teach your child at home, apply to the head of your Provincial Education Department to register your child for Home Education.
