South Africa - How To Apply for Deregistration of Motor Vehicle

Apply In-Person:

  1. To apply for Deregistration of a motor vehicle in person, the person who wants to do so should visit the nearest Registering authority in his/her province.
  2. The contact links for each province in South Africa are listed in the “Office Locations & Contacts” section of this page. Please click the link of your province and look for a nearest Municipality in your location.
  3. Contact the Municipality and get contact details about nearest Registering authority according to your location.
  4. Visit the nearest Registering authority and obtain the Application for deregistration of vehicle (ADV) to apply for a deregistration, from the concerned department. Or click on the following link to download: Link
  5. Make sure that you have all the documents listed in the “Required documents” section of this page.
  6. Now, complete the application form with appropriate information about you and your vehicle to be deregistered.
  7. Submit it to the concerned authority at the Registering authority, along with all the required documents.
  8. After submission, the authority will check for legibility of the application and the validity of the attached documents.
  9. And if the application information and all the documents are found in order, a deregistration certificate will be issued to the applicant on the same day of application.

  • Any person, who finds his /her vehicle not suitable to be driven anymore on a public road, can apply.
  • Any vehicle that has been stolen or permanently demolished or becomes exempt from registration can be applied for deregistration.
  • The vehicle should have been properly registered and the title holder or owner must hold an appropriate proof for his/her ownership.

  • The process of deregistration is free and the certificate is issued without any cost, except for penalties or arrears for late applications.

  • Please fill the application form with appropriate information of the applicant. An applicant is mostly the title holder or owner of the vehicle.
  • An application can also be lodged on behalf of an organisation as a proxy or representative. And the application should hold full information about the vehicle.
  • The application should also hold the declaration and attestation of the applicant with name and date.
