Procedure

Apply In-Person:

1. To apply for getting permit to import animals and animal products, the applicant has to visit the Import Export Policy Unit of the Animal Health Directorate of South Africa.

3. Visit the office and get the application form to import animals or animal products into the RSA as applicable to you from the relevant department.
4. Make sure that you have all the documents listed in the “Required documents” section of this page.
5. Complete the form as required with relevant details under respective sections. After completing the application form, attach the required documents with the completed form.
6. Then, proceed to submit the package to the relevant authority at the office in person for further processes. Make the necessary payment as directed.
7. You can also submit the application package through post to the postal address or fax to the fax number or email to the email address of the Import Export Policy Unit of the Animal Health Directorate.
8. After all the processes have got completed, the concerned authorities will proceed to make the issuance process of the permit.

Eligibility

• Any person living in South Africa, who wants to import animals or animal products into the RSA (either subjected to quarantine or not), can apply.
• Also, an animal or animal product that needs to be subjected to a relevant control further is eligible to possess a permit.
• The person applying and the product or animal for which permit is applied, should meet the requirement criteria set by the issuing authority.

Processing Time

Once the state veterinarian at the national office has approved the importation, it takes three to five working days to process the application and issue the permit.

Instructions

• Please state on the application form whether the permit will be collected or must be mailed to you.

• In cases where animals must be quarantined, you must contact the state veterinarian at the port of entry.

• The veterinary health certificate has to be completed in English by a veterinarian authorised by the veterinary authority of the exporting country within 10 days of departure.

• If you need any information on the exact requirements for a specific animal or animal product, you can obtain specimen copies of the veterinary import permit and the veterinary health certificate from the Permit Office.

Need for the Document

If you want to import live animals, animal products, infectious or contagious things into the Republic of South Africa, you must apply for a veterinary import permit from the Director of Animal Health. You must obtain this permit before the animal or product is shipped from the exporting country.
