Apply In-Person:
- To apply for getting copies of birth certificates in person, the applicant must visit the nearest office of the Department of Home Affairs.
- Please click on the following link for the address and contact information of the Department of Home Affairs Offices:Link Click on the province name which is applicable to you and you will get the details according to that.
- Find the DHA office nearest to your location and visit the office to get the application for getting copies of your Birth Certificat.
- Obtain Form BI-154 (application to get copies of Birth certificate) from the office of DHA or download the application form using the following link: Link
- Make sure that you have all the documents listed in the “Required Documents” section of this page.
- Now, start filling the form as required. You have to state the reason for the application and further you have to specify the type of Birth certificate copy that you want among the four choices.
- Then, the particulars of the person concerned (the child or person for whom birth certificate copy is sought), particulars of the father and mother of the person concerned and particulars of applicant should be filled with appropriate information.
- Once completed filling the application form, it should be attested with the applicant’s signature with date.
- Please submit it along with all the required documents at the concerned department in the nearest office of the Department of Home Affairs.
- Please pay the fees recommended by the office. Then, the application will be forwarded to the respective authorities for verification and validation.
When all the information provided is found true and the reason stated is found sufficient, the Director-General of Home Affairs will issue the requested Birth Certificate copy to the applicant.

EligibilityEdit
- The person or child that requires an additional copy must have their birth already registered at the Department of Home Affairs.
- The person concerned must have their Birth Registration document or Birth entry number.
- The person concerned should possess an Identity document.
- Persons who are not South African citizens, but who stay permanently or temporarily in the Republic can also apply.
FeesEdit
- Issuing of an Unabridged Birth or a reproduction of the relevant register or a reproduction of any supporting documentation which is coupled to the register concerned, as well as verification of information from birth registers with regard to any individual – R75.00

- Birth certificate copies are issued upon request to persons who are South African citizens, whether in the Republic or outside the Republic, including persons who are not South African citizens but who stay permanently or temporarily in the Republic, for whatever purpose.
- South African citizens who are outside the Republic should apply for copies of Birth certificates at nearest South African embassy, mission or consulate.
- Undocumented Foreign Nationals who are born in South Africa are issued with a certificate free of charge on registration of their births.

- A Birth certificate serves as the proof of the Birth registration and it may be required at the time of travelling overseas or in places where Identity proof is required. And an application for getting copies of Birth certificate is made when already issued copy is lost or when additional copies are required.
