Apply In-Person:

  1. To apply for getting a plant import permit in person, the applicant has to visit the National Plant Protection Organisation (NPPO) of South Africa.
  2. The address and contact details can be found in the “Who to contact” section in the following page: Link
  3. Visit the NPPO office and obtain an application form for a permit for the importation of controlled goods from the relevant department.
  4. Make sure that you have all the documents listed in the “Required documents” section of this page.
  5. Complete the form as required with relevant details under respective sections. After completing the application form, attach the required documents with the completed form.
  6. Then, proceed to submit the package to the relevant authority at the office in person for further processes. Make the necessary payment as directed.
  7. You can also email the completed form and required documents to the email address of the Plant Health Import Permit Office which is as follows: [email protected]
  8. After submission, the completed form and corresponding documents will be put into further verification and validation processes.
  9. Once all the processes got completed, the authorities will make necessary amendments for the permit issuance process.

EligibilityEdit

  • Any person living in South Africa, who wants to import plants, plant products and other regulated articles to South Africa, can apply for a Plant Import Permit.
  • Any product that is not exempted from the import permit in terms of the legislation is eligible to get a plant import permit.
  • The concerned product must meet the phytosanitary import conditions of the Agricultural Pests Act or the National Plant Protection Organisation of South Africa.

InstructionsEdit

  • If products are not exempted from the import permit, you must complete an application form to import the products. If the products are exempted, you must ensure that they comply with phytosanitary measures for such exemption.
  • You must send a copy of the import permit to the exporter/supplier. The National Plant Protection Organisation (NPPO) of the exporting country must check if the products meet the import requirements of South Africa.
  • If import requirements are met, the NPPO will issue a phytosanitary certificate. The exporter must send the original phytosanitary certificate with the goods to South Africa.
