Apply In-Person:

  1. To Apply for Activities with Genetically Modified Organisms, the applicant must go to the Department of Agriculture, Forest, and Fisheries (DAFF) office Contact Link
  2. The application form must be obtained from the authorities at the DAFF office at the GMO branch.
  3. Make sure that you have all the documents that are mentioned in the “Required Documents” section of this page.
  4. The application form must be filled with all the necessary details, and along with the required documents it must be submitted to the registrar of the GMO department at the DAFF office.
  5. If the details and the documents submitted by the applicant is valid and legitimate, and aligns with the eligibility requirements set by the GMO department, then the Activities with Genetically Modified Organisms request will be approved by the registrar.
  6. After the approval, the applicant will be issued with the registration certificate.
  7. The application fee must be paid while submitting the application, which is R655.00, and the proof of payment must be attached along with the other documents.
  8. The processing time to get the GMO activities registration is approximately 60 days.

  • Any person living in South Africa, who wants to get his /her facility, registered those deals with genetically modified organisms is eligible to apply for the registration.
  • The person applying and the facility to be registered should be in compliance with the terms and conditions set by the office.

Application Fee – R655.00.

The validity period will be mentioned in the registration certificate issued to the applicant.

  • Before applying for general release, the applicant should have completed the field trial activities within South Africa over a period of three growing seasons for the organisms.
  • Applications to continue with an activity will only be accepted if that activity was previously authorized.
