Apply In-Person:

  1. To Apply for Accreditation of Institutions as Nursing Education Institutions, the applicant must go to the South African Nursing Council’s Office (SANC). Contact Link
  2. The application form must be obtained from the authorities at the SANC office.
  3. The application must be filed at least 12 months prior to the intended date of commencement of the course, in a format and at a submission date as determined by the Council.
  4. Make sure that you have all the documents that are mentioned in the “Required Documents” section of this page.
  5. The application form must be filled with all the necessary details, and along with the required documents, it must be submitted to the SANC officials.
  6. The SANC will review the application, and if the documents submitted are legitimate and qualify the eligibility requirements of accreditation, then the institution will have to go through Audit.
  7. If the audit verification completed in the institution is legit, then the accreditation decision will be borne by the Council.
  8. The registration of accreditation will be approved if all the documents are legit.
  9. The applicant/institution will be given the accreditation certificate after the approval.
  10. The fee details of the accreditation will be intimated to the applicant while applying based on the type of accreditation made by the applicant.
  11. The processing time to get accreditation certificate will be intimated to the applicant while applying.

  • Completed institutional self- assessment and institutional portfolio as specified in regulation.
  • Proof of payment of application fee.
  • Evidence of meeting the requirements of regulation.
  • Evidence of meeting the prescribed accreditation requirements, criteria and standards for nursing education and training as determined by the Council.
  • Details of the nursing education and training programme(s) that the institution intends to offer.
  • Evidence of support from the relevant national or provincial health authority that there is a need for such education and training.

EligibilityEdit

The institution can apply for accreditation if it fulfils the given criteria:

  • In the case of a private institution, it must be registered with the Department of Higher Education and Training in terms of relevant legislation.
  • In the case of a public entity, it must be established or declared by the Minister of Education as a higher education and training institution in terms of relevant legislation.
  • The programme must be accredited with the Council on Higher Education.
  • The programme should meet the accreditation requirements, criteria and any standards for nursing education and training as determined by the Council from time to time.
  • Also, the institution must have:
    • Formal agreement(s) with one or more of the relevant authorities responsible for clinical facilities, which address the clinical learning opportunities, clinical accompaniment and supervision needs of learners placed in such health services.
    • A fixed physical address.
    • Access to sufficient clinical facilities that are appropriate for the achievement of the outcomes of the programme.
    • Evidence of quality control mechanisms over clinical education and training.
  • Also, the institution must demonstrate that there is a need for the programme to be accredited.
  • The institution must also have infrastructure and resources that are adequate and relevant for the achievement of the outcomes of the programme.
  • The institution must be registered with the Council as a professional nurse.
  • The institution should have an additional qualification in nursing education.
  • The institution must possess management qualification.
  • The applicant/owner applying for the accreditation should holds at least a bachelor’s degree in nursing.
  • The applicant/owner applying for the accreditation should hold a nursing qualification that is a level higher than the highest qualification offered by the nursing education institution, (OR) if the highest qualification offered is a doctoral degree, a nursing qualification at an equal level.

  • The validity period of the accreditation will be mentioned in the accreditation certificate issued to the applicant.
